PostPosted: Thu Jan 04, 2007 4:47 pm    Post subject: City of Edinburgh memorials discussion Reply with quote

This thread is now solely for discussion of potential memorials not covered by the Project in the City of Edinburgh.

I’ve edited this post reorganised the list to match the categories the forum is split into. I’ve also added the memorials which fall within the City boundaries such as Ratho and South Queensferry.
Some of these entries are here because they are in the UKNIWM database but I can’t vouch for the details. I suspect some of the unit ones are in fact individual ones which have been recorded incorrectly. I will update this list with additional entries and will link any memorials posted on the forum

Adam,
I have all the panels for the Churches in these areas as photos and will post them when I have some time.
I also have the St Giles women's service photos and Dr Elsie Inglis Memorial and her grave.
There is also a panel in Stenhouse Primary School to Thomas Hunter V.C.

Another 2 churches to add to the Edinburgh list:

Sacred Heart RC Church, Lauriston (nr Tollcross). The memorial is inside the front door on the right. According to the church website the memorial has been researched by a Mr R Munro.
St Cuthbert's RC Church, Slateford Road. The memorial is a plate on one of the pillars at the back right of the church.

I do not have pictures of either memorial.

I know the one you mean. It is on the outside wall of the Church.

I will add it to the list.

I've been told that there are 2 plaques to the 9th Royal Scots in a TerritorialArmy building in Edinburgh - hopefully I'll find out where soon.

I reckon the TA centre on Colinton Road beside Redford Barracks would be my favourite.

9th Royal Scots had their home at the TF Drill Hall in East Claremont Street. As far as I'm aware this is still one of the few City Centre buildings still in use by the TA so I'd say this is a better bet.

Here's a quick run down of Edinburgh Drill halls

Royal Scots Drill Halls in Edinburgh

4th & 5th Bn Royal Scots - Forrest Hill Drill Hall. Passed to Universities OTC now used by Edinburgh University. OTC now at Redford TA Centre

6th Bn Royal Scots - Viewforth. Passed to RAMC TA. Now converted to flats. RAMC now at Granton

7th Bn - Dalmeny Street Leith, Last used by Royal Marine reservists until early 2000s. Now empty.

9th Bn - East Claremont Street - Still in use by TA

Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers & Royal Corps of Signals Drill Halls

Easter Road - Unit moved to Lanark Road TA Centre. Closed in 1960s. Demolished for flats in 1990s

York Place - Unit moved to Lanark Road TA Centre. Closed in 1960s and now in use as Police Social Club

Chesser Crescent - Unit moved to Lanark Road TA Centre in 1990s. Was used by Army Cadet Force until a coule of years ago. Now demolished I believe. Probably for flats

Macdonald Road - Signals until 1960s. Used by Military Police and Intelligence Corps TA units until 2000s. Now used by ACF. There used to be a 25pdr outside this Drill Hall

Grindlay Street - Unit moved to Lanark Road TA Centre in 1960s. Converted to Heriot Watt University Student Union. Converted to Restaurant in early 1990s.

Colinton Road - Built in 1980s. Now houses UOTC I think.

Alnwickhill Road - Liberton. Built in 1930s for RA. Don't know much about this centre. It now has RLC and ACF units at it.

Lanark Road - Built in 1960s and still in use. Most non infantry Edinburgh volunteer units have used this as a base at some time or another over the past 40 years

Granton Square - Recently refurbished ex-Granton Hotel. Houses TA, ACF and HMS Claverhouse, the Leith RN Volunteer base. I don't know what Navy units operate in the city these days

Redford Barracks - It's been a few years since I was up in this part of Edinburgh but if memory serves me right the cavalry barracks is used by the regular army and the infantry barracks is used by the TA. This may now have changed with Glencorse being refurbished.

This is all from memory so I'm happy to be corrected by anyone with more detialed knowledge of Edinburgh TA centres.

Lanark Road West should have a Midlothian RFA memorial which came from Grindlay Street. It may also have something about L/Cpl James McPhie VC. It may have others as well given all the units which have used it over the years.

I notice that the NatWest bank has an archive of war memorials out at South Gyle Crescent - just go into UKNIWM and use Edinburgh as place and bank as keyword. There are an awful lot there (almost 60) and I think it would be a fairly significant undertaking to get them all.
I realise that most, if not all, of these would have come from England originally but they are are in Scotland now so I think we need to add them to the growing collection. If no-one else has any ideas about this, then I might be able to arrange to spend a day on it later in the year if the right contacts can be made.

Derek

I could get to East Claremont Street in a lunch hour. Would your contact be able to arrange access for me to take photos?

Spoons

I’ll have a look at the UKNIWM later and see about adding them to this list.

This is The Royal Bank of Scotland Group Archives. See here if you are going to visit:

http://www.rbs.com/about03.asp?id=ABOUT_US/OUR_HERITAGE/OUR_ARCHIVES/USING_OUR_ARCHIVES/CONTACTING_OUR_ARCHIVES

Most of the NatWest ones are from branches which have closed. They were then moved to a chapel within NatWest’s training college. When that closed they were placed in storage. I didn’t realise they had moved them to Edinburgh. That makes them eligible to be added to the Edinburgh list even though they relate to English branches.

Here’s some background info from a RBS Group Archive document on The Group’s War Memorial policy

“Most of the UK constituent banks of the current Royal Bank of Scotland Group built collective war memorials at head office buildings or principal regional offices to honour all the dead of that bank. In the case of Williams Deacon’s Bank framed photographs of this head office memorial were also sent to every branch.
However, some of our banks with branch networks commissioned separate war memorials for each branch. London County Westminster & Parr’s Bank, later Westminster Bank, erected memorial plaques in branches and offices commemorating by name local staff who lost their lives in both the First and Second World Wars. Whilst National Provincial & Union Bank of England erected identical plaques in branches and offices commemorating all the 2,681 staff who served and the 415 who gave their lives in the First World War. Many of these plaques are still displayed in branches and some, rescued from various closed branches, were moved to the chapel at Heythrop Park and subsequently put into store in London upon the disposal of the Heythrop estate.”

I work for RBS and a couple of years ago the Bank started placing a poppy wreath in the lobby of our 1970s building. Last year they announced that they were going to erect a new extension to our building to link it with another office block and it would become the new entrance. I enquired whether any spare memorials in storage could be used as a focus for the remembrance wreath in the new building. I was told that it was only the branch ones they had in storage which would not be appropriate for our building. I suppose that means that these branch memorials are unlikely to be moved from storage. It’s a shame they are no longer in their home towns but they are at least being looked after.

Regards

Adam

I have now added the 53 closed NatWest branch plaques to the end of the list of Edinburgh memorials.

I've also remembered a couple of more TA centres.

Brandon Terrace, Canonmills - Beside Water of Leith. Army Service Corps TF. Demolished long ago.

Leith Fort - Home to the Royal Artillery in Scotland for 150 years and laterly used by an RAMC TA unit. Demolished in 1960s except for the main gate and some of its walls. Now home to some pretty horrible 1970s flats & sheltered housing.

And an update on one I've already listed. It looks like the old 7th Royal Scots building in Dalmeny Street is being converted into a community theatre for Leith.
