My great-uncle Lt. Daniel Martin TAYLOR of B Company, 1/7th Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) was killed on 28/06/1915 at the Battle of Gully Ravine, Gallipoli. He is believed to be buried at Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery near to where he died and has a memorial stone there, but I do not know what he would have had in the UK under those circumstances.
I do not know if his parents had a family gravestone/memorial erected for him (which sometimes happened), or whether he is commemorated on any formal war memorial in Glasgow where people might gather in November each year. The Cameronains War Memorial does not include any names.
His family were living at Chislehurst, 19 Newlands Road, Glasgow then so I do not know if there are any memorials nearby. My grandmother (his younger sister) was later married at Newlands UF Church which seems to be around the corner from maps I have tried to get that information from the church but they do not reply to letters or email so I do not know if they have a memorial there or nearby. A Imperial War Museum/Channel 4 search on his name does not receive any matches.
Have you any advice etc? On all official records (CWGC and Edinburgh Castle) he is listed as D M Taylor rather than Daniel.

Hello Alastair and welcome to the forum.
I've checked my own database, which doesn't include the Glasgow Roll of Honour, but unfortunately didn't find anything. I have started photographing the war graves in Cathcart Cemetery which is near Newlands and I will keep an eye open for any mention of Lt. Taylor on family gravestones. I have been posting them on the Scottish War Graves Project Forum, Renfrewshire section.
Good Luck with the search.
Jim
(Mod edit - Jim, you'd not typed 'shire' in 'renfrewshire', you'd typed something else and it wasn't very flattering to the locals Adam) |
