I was advised that War Memorials that mentioned ordinary soldiers started with Boer War. Can anybody confirm this? |

I would say they became more common with the Boer War, but we certainly have a civic memorial for the Crimean War on this very forum. |

I think early memorials which commemorate soldiers as opposed to officers are certainly in the minority but there are exceptions. In addition to the Crimea civic memorial at Balmaclellan http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1921, there are regimental memorials that list ordinary soldiers prior to the Boer war and these are usually found in churches or cathedrals.
For an example, St Giles Cathedral Edinburgh, 72nd Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders for India 1857 to 1865. Not yet posted on the forum, but I have photos and hope to get to it soon.

Thanks for information. That was what I was thinking. I will now go and collect the pint bet. Wish I could share it with you! |
