OS Map Ref: NY135815
Located in the middle of the road on the main street outside the Town Hall.
Unveiled on the 7th May 1922 and the bronze was sculpted by H.C. Fehr
This memorial lists only those killed in the Great War.

How is it decided where a name appears on a parish memorial?
My great uncle PTE George Johnstone is named on this memorial at Hutton Church despite not living in parish. He stayed at Blindhillbush Farm which is just in Applegarth and Sibbaldbie parish.
Is there any way you can tell whether the PTE George Johnstone named on Lockerbie WW1 memorial is the same man. Similarly is there any way of finding out if CPL George Johnstone on Applegarth and Sibbalbie is my great uncle.
Goerge was killed in France on 30 May 1918 and is buried in Tannay Britiish Cementry Thiennes. His service number was 23286 |

Is there any way that I can confirm who the George Little who was in Canadian regiment was?
Was he Lance Coporal George Little who was in Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment) 54th Bat who was killed on 17 October 1916 with a service number 443769.
Is this the same George Little who is named on memorial in Applegarth and Sibbaldbie? |

No, I think it covers several parishes - Dryfesdale being one, Applegarth and Sibbaldbie being another. The Lockerbie memorial is actually in Dryfesdale Parish.
Just a little way along the road from the Lockerbie memorial is Dryfesdale Parish church and this has its own memorial which is posted at http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1472

Interesting - several parishes on one... but not unique. How could I forget the beautiful memorial in the Church at Dryfesdale. |

Thanks for the link. I had found this information previousily and this is the George Little I have been trying to find out more information on.
In cwgc memorial site he is listed as a Lance Corporal but at Applegarth (and Fishbeck is farm next to Applegarth Chruch) as CPL.
On Lockerbie memorial the George Little is listed as PTE but again from Canadian regiment and I was wanting to see if this is the same person |

An article in todays Annadale paper is asking for the names of the people killed in WW2 to be added to this monument.
At present the memorial for WW2 is inside Lockerbie Town Hall and it is not possible to lay a wreath or pay respects on a Sunday (like this year) when the Hall is closed |

Thanks for the info. Yes it struck me as odd when I found that the WW2 names were hidden away. Even more so when I first visited the Town Hall, asked on reception to see the memorial and was told there was not one there! On a return visit I spoke to a different person and they directed me to it. If even the Town Hall staff are not aware of its existance, then it is denied its purpose as a memorial.

This memorial was cat B listed on 4 October 1988.
The listing includes the following description:
"James B Dunn ARSA, FRIBA, Edinburgh; unveiled 7th May 1922.
War memorial, winged bronze figure raised on tall white
granite plinth, bronze name plaques to elevations and
wreaths. "

Just to add to Jamie's info on Fehr's use of the Lockerbie figure. It was used by the sculptor at 9 different sites to my knowledge - Leeds, Burton-upon-Trent, Colchester, Eastbourne, Shepherd's Bush (sometimes listed as Hammersmith), Langholm, Lisburn in Northern Ireland & Lockerbie. Most interestingly the same figure was slightly altered (the tilt of the head & the substitution of laurel for the Sword of Justice) & shown supporting a dying soldier whose gas mask lies at his feet, suggesting the manner of his death.
At Leeds, Burton & Colchester the figure stands on top of a tall pedestal, at the base of which are additional figures of St George on one side, & Peace on the other.

I've just noticed that my previous comment on the reuse of this figure mentions one example where the figure is combined with that of a dying soldier, but I failed to say where this is. It's actually in Northern Ireland - at Portadown.
