Tillicoultry - Devonvale Mills WWII Memorial
The memorial is built into a wall directly across from the Sterling Furniture Warehouse Entrance. It features a freestone tablet capped with the figure of a kneeling angel holding a sword adorned with a garland or wreath. It is an interesting sculpture and is not fully in the round but is rather flattened almost like a relief sculpture and it would be interesting to know the name of the artist.

There is a typo in the title, it is Devonvale Mills. This Memorial was erected by the Platfoot family who were the managers of the Samuel Jones Ltd Paper Mills across road in what is now Sterling Mills. Samuel Jones were famous for the Butterfly Brand paper. |

This memorial was created by Charles D'Orville Pilkington Jackson who created numerous memorials across Scotland. His works include Robert The Bruce statue at the Bannockburn Memorial and he was appointed "supervising sculptor" for the Scottish National War Memorial.
This is not his only work in Tillicoultry. He was commissioned by Sydney Platfoot, managing Director of Samuel Jones and Co to complete the Devonvale Memorial along with the Platfoot grave in Tillicoultry Cemetery. I believe he also created the WW2 Memorial in the Garden of Remembrance adjacent to the WW1 Memorial in the town's Dollar Road, Cemetery. |
