I've spotted this link today:

http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search2.php

This search index provides links to the Commonwealth War Graves Casualty database and enables searches to be made on a wider range of subjects than a direct search of the CWGC website allows.
I haven't played with the search facility yet but hopefully it will be good.

It doesn't say so on the page, but this appears to be a WW1 search page only. It won't accept a WW2 date.

I think its presently running at about 60% of the Great War database. Nevertheless I identified about 20 'extra' casualties Blairgowrie/Rattray from searching the additional info. field!

The search engine index covers about 99.1% of UK and somewhere around 50-60% for other nationalities. I have just added a secondary regiment search field (around 4% of records have data here) but this is only working where the main unit is UK - more will be added later.

(the one to blame!)

Edit: Yes its WW1 only at present. WW2 could be added if there is sufficient interest!

I'm personally very interested in a WW2 version.

Keep up the good work!

Me too.

A fantastic resource Geoff, thanks for providing it.

David and Paul,

I don't have as much data for WW2 but would be interested in updating it sometime. Probably will be on a different engine.

I'd just like to echo what has already been said. An amazing, and very important resource - goodness only knows how its been done!

Geoff. My apologies for underestimating the completed work. I took the 60% from a 'No records found' return which indicated this.

rgds.,
Mark

Mark,

The index was indeed around 60% until a week or so ago when I updated it. UK index totals are now about 99.1% and other nationalities about 60%. These should increase to around 99% when I next update the index.
There are some errors in my index which are corrections to the CWGC data since I started the project, also the recent 'In From The Cold' will not be in my index.

Thanks for the comments.

Here you go, although not complete yet. Have not had much of a chance to have a go myself yet, although it seems to run OK.

WW2 version of The Search Engine :

http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search39-47.php

UK only at the moment. I'll add later.
Civilian War Dead can be found by selecting in the regiment selection field.

I have tried them both out and they are a great resource. One comment if I may? it would be really good if you could find some way to add the forename as a search field (I know it is not present on all records). Many memorials only have first and last names - if you are presented with Jonathan Smith for example that would be an almost impossible task as it stands (532 records on CWGC own search facilty) but only 2 names on SNWM which does have a first name search field.

What a disaster, Geoff's Search engine for the First World War is no longer available Crying or Very sad

When you use the link above it redirects you and then it simply comes up as:

This page has now closed.
Thank You !

Luckily the WW2 version is still there. (and the forename field Spoons mentions above is there)

I like using Geoff's search engines and this will be sorely missed by me.

Does anyone know the reason?
