Not listed on UKNIWM.

This memorial is a building (Memorial Institute) which no longer exists having been demolished, possibly in the 1970s. The plaques have been saved and form the basis of the new ‘Waird’ memorial which is posted here http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=869

After researching rumours, supposition and heresay, I eventually found the information about this memorial from these photographs which are held in the Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum. The photos are from a riding of the marches ceremony.

I have not been able to confirm the exact location but it was believed to be on the left hand site of the A76 when leaving Sanquhar to the North West. My best estimate of the OS Map Ref is NS 768 111.

Spoons,

Great work, answers the questions on the other thread - its well worth unravelling these 'mysteries' and good to have the information on the site.

A display cabinet in the Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum contains this document for the opening of the memorial institute on 18th September 1921. Unfortunately the museum attendant does not hold keys for the locked cabinet so it was not possible to get any further information from the document.
