BLACK WATCH IRAQ 2004
PTE KEVIN T MCHALE

It is with great regret that the Ministry of Defence has to confirm that Private Kevin Thomas McHale of the 1st Battalion The Black Watch died in a road traffic accident in North Babil province on 29 October 2004. Aged 27, he was single and came from Lochgelly in Fife. He had served five years with the Battalion as a Warrior armoured vehicle driver. This was his second operational tour with The Black Watch in Iraq, having served there during the period of active combat operations in the spring of 2003. He had also served in Kosovo. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with his family at this difficult time.

"The Battalion deployed yesterday [29 October] from Shaibah Logistic Base: 600 miles, 800 men, with a great many armoured vehicles and equipment. That operation went off remarkably well, despite the best efforts of the enemy to thwart it. Very sadly, in the last stages of that operation, an accident took place in which Kevin McHale died. Our thoughts are very much with his family at home tonight in Lochgelly in Fife, and in particular with his father Michael, who was a great friend of many in the Battalion.

"Private McHale was a great character. He had served for five years with the Black Watch and been in Kosovo, and in Iraq the first time around. He had always been a friend of many; we will miss him deeply."
:-Lieutenant Colonel James Cowan, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion The Black Watch.

ITALIAN FORCES
JOE ABBRO
I have never seen an entry such as this before - has anyone else? Apart from the local papers I wouldn't know how to go about identifying this man.

We've had a few Italians come up before. Cleland has two on its civic memorial and I've noticed some on RC church memorials in Edinburgh. I'm sure there will be quite a few in RC churches in Glasgow as well.

Ah yes. Cleland must have been one of the first memorials posted on this forum - and I've googled your thread from the GWF in 2004! - I'm way behind!!

DJP, 20 September 2008

LOCHGELLY WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED. – Lochgelly war memorial was unveiled yesterday afternoon in front of the Parish Church in Bank Street, and in presence of a large crowd. The memorial is a rectangular pillar in Scottish baronial style, flanked by panels on which are shown in relief the names of 257 Lochgelly men who lost their lives in the Great War. The whole is of granite, and has a very striking appearance. A large number of ex-Servicemen paraded, under the command of Lieut.-Colonel Macduff. Ex-Provost Paul presided, and an address was given by Sir Ralph Anstruther, Bart., Lord-Lieutenant of the county of Fife. The unveiling ceremony was performed by Mrs Mary Hynes, whose six sons enlisted, and two were killed and three disabled. Mr Robert Small, J.P., Town-Clerk, read the names, and the Chairman formally handed over the memorial to the custody of the Town Council, on whose behalf it was accepted by Provost Bain. The clergymen officiating were the Rev. D. M. Aitken, B.D., Church Mount U.F. Church; the Rev. R. N. Paton, B.D., Parish Church; and the Rev. R. K. Jones, Lochgelly Episcopal Church. Over 80 wreaths were laid on the memorial. The Scotsman, Thursday, 4 December 1924, 5.

9445 L.-Cpl. James Walker Lees, 1st Cameron Highlanders

Intimation has just been received that Lance-Corpl. James Less, Lochgelly, 1st Cameron Highlanders (19), has died in hospital from wounds received in action. Lance-Corpl. Lees was wounded on the 9th at the battle of Ypres. He took part in the retreat from Mons, where he was poisoned through drinking water, but afterwards returned to the front. A sad incident was that his brother Thomas, who is in the same regiment, and has taken part in practically every engagement during the war, helped to carry his wounded brother from the battlefield. The Edinburgh Evening News, Wednesday, 24 November 1914.

6825 Pte. Thomas Lees, 1st Cameron Highlanders

Intimation has been received from the Base Hospital in France that Private Thomas Lees, 1st Cameron Highlanders, Lochgelly, died from wounds received in action on 18th November [sic]. Only last week it was reported that his brother had died from wounds. Private Lees has taken part in practically every engagement since the commencement of the war. He carried his wounded brother from the battlefield, and in a letter to his relatives he said: “I had the most painful duty of carrying our young brother out of his trench to-night. He was hit a little after 11 o’clock in the forenoon, and it was after six o’clock at night before I could get him out, as it was too dangerous to expose ourselves in daylight. He was suffering a bit, but it cheered him up a lot when he heard my voice. It put me crazy when I heard him moaning. I forgot where I was, and I cursed the Germans and all that caused the war. He said to me when he left, ‘Take care, Tim, and not cop out.’ Ah! I wish I could promise him that.” The Edinburgh Evening News, Wednesday, 2 December 1914.
