Does the commemoration at Kelty for Paul Lowe, Iraq 2004, combined with the entries at Glenothes for Scott McCardle and Marc Ferns, who also died in Iraq make a full list of three (3) Fife men to have fallen in Iraq ?

Can members tell me of any other Iraq or Afghanistan menorials in either in Fife or other Scottish locales ?

Does the National War Memorial at Edinburgh also record post-1945 fatalities, or is the AFM at Alrewas the only UK nation-wide memorial for these men?

I take it you haven’t checked the rest of the forum. If you look at this thread

Iraq and Afghanistan deaths on community war memorials

You can see the list of Scots who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan and if they have been added to memorial there is a link to that memorial on the forum.

Private, 1st Bn The Black Watch
Accidentally killed in a vehicle accident 29/10/2004 North Babil Province, Iraq

As you can see all the Fife lads except Private Scott Kennedy have been commemorated on their local memorials. I don’t know if Dunfermline plan to add his name. He died in 2007 so it may be some time before he is added to any memorial.

The SNWM also records the Post-45 details as well as the Armed Forces Memorial. See here:

Adam

Hi,

Just had a look at the CWGC site to see if George W Drummond and John Drummond, both WWII deaths, are related.

John Drummond 1551788 was an air gunner under training when he was killed on 09/06/43. He is buried in Beath Eastern Cemetery.

I can't find any entry for George W Drummond. I've searched through all the Drummond entries for WWII and no luck.

Anyone know why he would not be on the CWGC site?

Regards,

Alex

Quite a few reasons why someone would be on a local memorial but not listed on SNWM.

1. He died after the cutoff date for CWGC
2. He served under a different name than he was known locally
3. He served as a civilian (e.g. Red Cross or NAAFI) and died of illness
4. He left the armed forces and then died of a non war related illness
I am sure there are other reasons.

Local war memorial committees could (and did) put any of these categories on local memorials, none of whom would qualify for CWGC.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info. As these are war memorials I had always thought that the person had to have died on active service to be mentioned on the memorial.

Hi,

Thanks for the details. Much appreciated.

As the coal industry was a large part of the War effort then I can see why he would be added to the memorial.

Alex.,

It may be that George W. Crawford served in the armed forces either throughout the war or was discharged through illness or injury prior to its conclusion.
He probably went back to the mines which was his pre-war occupation. When the names for inclusion on the memorial were being supplied a member of his family, due to his wartime service, would have put his name forward.
I've seen this quite a few times with other memorials.
