BLAIRGOWRIE ADVERTISER: 02.12.1916
Mr Andrew Mackie, Tain Royal Academy, formerly of Blairgowrie High School, has received an official message stating that his brother, Lieut. T.S. Mackie, of the North Staffordshire Regiment was "missing believed killed".
He later received the following letter from an officer of the North Staffordshire Regiment, which leaves little ground for hope:- "I much regret to inform you that your brother, Lieut. T.S. Mackie, was so severely wounded in action on the 18th inst. that his death can only be presumed. He was wounded in the stomach and his servant stayed by him until he was told to leave and look after himself. The servant tells me that the wound was so severe that he could not possibly have lived. Lieut. Mackie was leading the company into action at the time with two of us under him, one of whom is missing. The battalion suffered very heavy casualties, including the C.O. and adjutant, who are missing".
The gallant officer, who was 29 years of age, was a son of the late Mr Wm. Mackie, Culloden House. He had a distinguished career at Edinburgh University where he graduated with first-class honours in Economics, and "proxime accessit" for the Van Dunlop Scholarship. He intended to enter the U.F. Church, and was in his final year at New College, when war was declared. Responding to the call of duty, he joined the ranks of the Royal Scots in October 1914, but in May of the following year he received his commission, and was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment. In December 1915 he was promoted lieutenant.
During the college vacations Mr Mackie conducted missions in Struy, Erribol, Ardrishaig, Portree and Bridge of Cally, Blairgowrie, and he also preached in the three U.F. Churches in Blairgowrie and Rattray, in which district he was well-known. During his last year as a student he assisted in St. Jame's U.F. Church, Edinburgh. |

My copy of the book is a paperback, so I might be able to supply a better photo if I haven't packed the book away yet. Leave it with me. |

I believe that this officer is named on this memorial, but his name is shown as "MacKenzie D. F." as opposed to "Fraser D.M."
FRASER, D'Arcy Mackenzie Major 75th Carnatic Infantry (Indian Army) attd. 6th Bn Lincolnshire Regiment
Born: India (14/10/1878).
Age: 36 Date of Death: 07/08/1915 Cause: Killed in action (Initially reported as missing).
Military Service: The Indian Army Quarterly List dated 1/1/1912 (Page 126) shows the following information “First Commissioned 22 Jan 98; Date Rank: 22 Jan 07, Rank: Captain.”
*Family Notes: Son of Lt. Gen. Hastings Fraser and his wife Charlotte Fraser, of Mansion House, Abertarff, Inverness and Ardachie, Fort Augustus; husband of Esther Fraser (nee Watson), of Weston, Fermoy, Co. Cork (Married St, Marylebone, London, 1909).
In Memoriam HASTINGS-FRASER
In proud and most loving memory of CAPTAIN D'ARCY FRASER, Indian Army attached Lincoln Regiment, killed in action at Suvia Bay, on the 7th August 1915 and his brother CAPTAIN DAVID FRASER, 1st Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), who died in India, 12th January1912, sons of the late Lieut-General Hastngs Fraser C.B., Indian Army, of Ardachie, Fort Augustus N.B, and Mrs Hastings Fraser. The Times, Tuesday 7th Aug 1917.
Other Family Losses: His brother, Captain David Fraser 1st Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) died in India on 12/1/1912.
Other notes: Major Fraser’s Medal Index Card does not give a date for his entry into the Gallipoli Theatre of Operations. Between 1917 and 1922 his mother posted a Memoriam notice in The Times on the anniversary of D’Arcy’s death to commemorate both her sons.
Will notes: The Probate Records (dated 4/12/1915) reads as follows “Fraser D’Arcy MacKenzie of 97 Prince of Wales Mansions, Battersea Park, Surrey, Captain (temp Major), 75th Carnatic Infantry attached 6th Lincolnshire Regiment killed in action between 7th and 11th of August 1915 at Gallipoli. Probate London 4 Dec. to James Richardson Wharfinger. Effects £108 7s. 6d.”
Census notes: The 1891 Scottish Census shows the Fraser family (residing at, Mansion House, Abertarff, Inverness) as follows; Hastings Fraser (Retired Officer, aged 61) and Charlotte Fraser (Wife, aged 32) also present was their son Darcy M. (aged 12).
Special Notes: Major Fraser is not listed on the IWM records. Various records list him as dying between 7th and 11th of August 1915.
Grave/Memorial: II. B. 5. Green Hill Cemetery.
Other memorials: Major Fraser is named in the Scottish Roll of Honour in the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh; he is also named on World War Memorial at Merchiston Castle School, 294 Colinton Road, Edinburgh, EH13 0PU. The Inverness Burgh War Memorial (located in Edith Cavell Gardens, beside River Ness), Inverness, has the name “MacKenzie D.F. Captain” inscribed on it memorial plate; I believe that this may refer to Major Fraser. |
