Springfield - Fife
Does not appear to be registered with UKNIWM
The Springfield war memorial is a grey granite celtic cross with wheel-head and celtic knotwork pattern carved in relief on the face of the head and upper section of the shaft. The cross stands on a low tapering pedestal which rests on a plinth. The commemoration and names of the WWII dead are listed in black lead lettering on the face of the shaft, and the names of the WWI dead on the face of the pedestal.
The monument stands in its own small garden surrounded by iron railed enclosure halfway along the main road in the village.
An additional marble memorial in the form of an open book has been placed in front of the monument which reads:

That's a particularly odd way of listing the casualties for the Second World War. It's almost as if they just tried to fit them in any old way. |

It is very strange. Why didn't they use on of the other sides of the plinth? |

Unveiled on Sunday 8th of January 1922.
(Glasgow Herald 9th January 1922)
"Lady Cochrane of Cults yesterday afternoon unveiled at Springfield the Aberdeen granite Celtic Cross, erected on ground gifted by Mr Matthew N. Honeyman, Hawarden, Kirkintilloch, in memory of the 30 men of the parish of Springfield who fell in the war."
