Old Deer Parish - Banff & Buchan, Peterhead District
UKNIWM Ref No. 8604

The Old Deer Parish war memorial takes the form of a tall, tapering grey granite celtic cross with wheel-head, central boss, and celtic knotwork carved on the face of the cross and shaft. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed in lead lettering on the faces of the tapering pedestal which stands on a base of three low, rustic grey granite steps.
The monument stands in the kirkyard on Bank Road.

Its hard to make out but I believe the granite heart in the second photograph is inscribed:
IN
LOVING MEMORY
OF MY DARLING
JACKIE
6TH JAN 1916
I don't know when this was placed at the memorial and thought it might perhaps pre-date the war memorial as part of a street shrine set up during the Great War? It would be interesting to find out.

I thought it should be possible to find 'Jackie' but if 6th January 1916 is his date of death then he is not listed on this memorial.
Nor can I identify him from the 11 men listed on SNWM who died on this date. It would have been nice though.

I wonder if one of the men listed was in the Aberdeenshire Police?
