CRAMOND

The Cramond Parish war memorial was unveiled and dedicated at a special service in the Parish Church yesterday. All the ministers of the various churches in the parish took part in the service, and the preacher was the Rev. Dr J. Harry Miller, C.B.E. Mrs J. H. Davidson, sister-in-law of the Archbishop of Canterbury, unveiled the memorial, which consists of a stained glass window in five panels, a memorial brass with the names of the men (one hundred and five in number) who died in the Great War, and also a beautiful mosaic of Old Cramond Brig, with the figures of King James V. and Jock Howison in the foreground, and the motto "Forward without fear." The whole memorial was designed and executed by Mr Oscar Paterson, Glasgow

The Beadle told me that the face of Jesus at the top of the window is the last part of it to get the sun in the evening and it gives quite an effect.

Some of the Second World War names are also on the Davidson's Mains War Memorial.

Among those listed on this memorial are three men also listed on individual memorials

Captain The Right Honourable Neil Primrose at St Giles High Kirk, and another two oficers commemorated in Cramond kirk and Cramond Churchyard

Even though the Beadle kindly tuned the lights on in the church it was dark and difficult to get clear shots of the names on this memorial. Here are some more images

The names on the photographs are not that clear so I’ve transcribed them along with the inscriptions.

To the glory of God. This tablet and the adjoining window were erected by the parishioners in remembrance of the men from this parish who died in the Great War at the call of king and country.
They left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger and finally passed out of the sight of man by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their lives that others might live in freedom

Mr William Scholes has kindly provided us with some more information

"Douglas Strachan designed and gifted the World War 1 stained glass memorial in Cramond Kirk. The mosaic was dedicated on October 1921. 105 names are recorded on the WW1 memorial - and 12 for WW2."

Also named on memorials at Cargilfield Prep School, Winchester College and Packwood Haugh School (Shropshire). His father was headmaster of Cargilfield Prep School.

Named on the Haddington War Memorial in East Lothian as:

WILLIAM DICK. SCOTS GUARDS
William Dick â€“ age 36 â€“ Private (12779) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William and his family lived in Hardgate Street, Haddington when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915. William lost both of his legs and died in the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek.
Born 1880 in Broxburn, Uphall, Linlithgowshire. Son of William and Ellen or Helen Dick of Davidson's Mains, Cramond, Midlothian. Husband of Margaret (Reilly) Dick who he married in 1911 in Dunbar, East Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 20 June 1916 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
