JOHN AINSLIE
John Ainslie – age 18 – Private (S/15744) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a ploughman when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but he contracted meningitis and died in the 10th Stationary Hospital in St. Omer.
Born 1893 in Smailholm, Roxburghshire. Son of John and Mary (Turnbull) Ainslie, of Newbyth, Whitekirk & Tyninghame.
Died on Active Service on 16 April 1915 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.


GEORGE ANDERSON
Possibly:
George Anderson – age 20 – Private (12405) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
George joined his battalion in France in May 1915 but he was fatally wounded within a month.
Born 1895 in Dundee as George A. Flinn. Adopted son of George and Elizabeth (Hay) Anderson of 30 Castle Street, Dunbar, East Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 19 June 1915 and buried in Gorre British And Indian Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Dunbar Burgh and Parish War Memorial.


GEORGE, LORD BINNING
George Baillie-Hamilton, Lord Binning, Companion of the Bath, Member of the Royal Victorian Order – age 60 – Brigadier General, Royal Horse Guards, Commanding Lothians and Border Horse.
George was educated at Eton College and at Trinity College, Cambridge before he was commissioned in the Royal Horse Guards in September 1880. He served in the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War, the Nile Expedition of 1884, and the Hazara campaign of 1888. In 1889 he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Viceroy of India, and from 1899 to 1903 held the command of the Royal Horse Guards. He retired from the army in 1907, but remained in the Territorial Force as commanding officer of the Lothian and Border Horse, and served as His Majesty's Lieutenant of the County of Berwick from 1901 until he died. He was appointed a temporary Brigadier-General in December 1915, and given command of 41st Brigade in 14th (Light) Division. He remained in command until April 1916, returning home to command 11th Mounted Brigade. Lord Binning died of influenza and pneumonia at the family property of Tyninghame, Prestonkirk, East Lothian.
Born December 1856 in Edinburgh. Son of George Ballie-Hamilton, 11th Earl of Haddington, and of the late Countess of Haddington, Helen Katharine Warrender (died 1889). Husband of Katharine Augusta Millicent Salting, Lady Binning, of Mellerstain House, Earlston who he married in 1892 at St George Hanover Square, London.
Died on Service on 12 January 1917 and buried in Tyninghame Burial Ground, East Lothian.
Also named on the Earlston Parish War Memorial and on the Earlston Parish Church Memorial.

ALEXANDER BORTHWICK
Alexander Borthwick – age 28 – Private (12/1561) Auckland Regiment, New Zealand Infantry.
Alexander was a carpenter working for the NZ Government at Te Kauwhata in the North Island when he enlisted in December 1914. He sailed from Auckland in February 1915 for Egypt and Gallipoli.
Born 1887 in Haddington, East Lothian. Son of the late John Borthwick (died 1897) and of Annie (Pearson) Borthwick (died 1905)
In 1901 Alexander, his mother and his sister Jessie were in Whitekirk & Tyninghame and Jessie of Fordel Cottage, North Berwick and of 24 Craigleith Road, Edinburghwas named as his next of kin.
Missing in Action on 8 August 1915 and named on the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


ROGER BUGLASS
Rodger Smith Buglass – age 30 – Private (40094) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Rodger was posted as Private (1059) to the Royal Scots in France but was transferred to the HLI. He fought at the Somme in 1916 and was wounded at Arras in April 1917. He rejoined his battalion in June and he was part of the Trench Mortar Battery team when he was killed near Ypres.
Born 1887 in Ayton, Berwickshire as Roger Fish. Son of Mary (Fish) Buglass and step-son of Thomas Buglass of Coldingham, Berwickshire, of Auld Hame, North Berwick and of East Linton, East Lothian who had married in 1891.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1917 and buried in Dochy Farm New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Cockburnspath Parish War Memorial and on the Church Roll of Honour.


WILLIAM COMBE
William Combe – age 19 – Private (17046) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William was resident in Prestonkirk, East Lothian when he enlisted at Whitekirk and he joined his battalion in France in September 1915.
Born 1897 in Dunbar, East Lothian. Son of John Donaldson Combe and of Annie (Kellagher) Combe of Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 3 March 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Athelstaneford Parish War Memorial in East Lothian.

WILLIAM DICKMAN
William Dickman – age 19 – Lance Corporal (S/2681) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but he was wounded and evacuated to hospital at Shorncliffe in Kent where he died.
Born 1896 in Duns, Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Margaret (Jeffrey) Dickman of East Lodge, Newbyth, Whitekirk & Tyninghame.
Died of Wounds on 10 November 1915 and buried in Shorncliffe Military Cemetery, Kent.


GEORGE DOWNIE
George Downie – age 22 – Corporal (43790) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was a ploughman at Lochhouses, Whitekirk & Tyninghame when he enlisted as Private (1812) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in July 1915. He was posted to the 16th Royal Scots in France in July 1916. He was wounded in April 1917 and he was evacuated to hospital in the UK. He returned to France in June 1917 and was transferred to the 12th Battalion in May 1918.
Born 1896 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as George Smith Downie. Son of George and William Mina (McKenzie) Downie of Sunnyside, Prestonkirk, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 20 July 1918 and buried in Le Peuplier Military Cemetery, Caestre, France.


WILLIAM HALL
William Hall – age 27 – Private (1913) 5th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William was an under-keeper with the Earl of Haddington at Tyninghame when he enlisted at East Linton as Private (4256) in the Royal Scots in February 1916. He was posted to the 5th Scottish Rifles in France and had been at the front for only a few weeks when he was killed.
Born 1889 at Yester, Garvald, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Andrew and Jane (Rankin) Hall of High Street, Greenlaw, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 29 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Greenlaw Parish War Memorial.

William Hood – age 20 – Corporal (26276) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William joined the 11th Royal Scots in France in December 1915 and later served with the 2nd Royal Scots before joining the 13th Battalion.
Born 1896 in Garvald, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late William Hood (died 1909) and of Agnes (Brotherston) Hood, of Prestonmains, Prestonkirk, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 10 July 1917 and buried in Brandhoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Prestonkirk Parish War Memorial.


ANDREW MAIN
Andrew Main – age 19 – Private (31325) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Born 1897 in Dunbar, East Lothian. Son of Andrew and Alison (Landles) Main of Blackdykes, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 4 April 1917 and buried in Ste. Catherine British Cemetery, France.


CHARLES MORRISON
Charles Morrison – age 21 – Lance Corporal (36879) 19th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Charles was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots and as Private (964) he was mobilised in August 1914, landing with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. He transferred to the MGC in May 1916.
Born 1895 in Whitekirk. Son of James Thomas Shepherd Morrison and Margaret Jane (Sutherland) Morrison of Tyninghame.
Killed in Action on 24 August 1916 and buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, France.

William Manson Morrison – age 19 – Private (6309 & S/13242) 1/7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William served with the 10th Gordons before he was transferred to the 1/7th Battalion.
Born 1897 in Whitekirk. Son of James Thomas Shepherd Morrison and Margaret Jane (Sutherland) Morrison of Tyninghame.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1916 and buried in Y Ravine Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France.

WILLIAM MYLES
William Myles – age 53 – Sergeant (1293) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William had been a forester when he joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but within a couple of weeks he contracted meningitis and died in hospital in Rouen.
Born 1861 in Stenton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Robert Myles (died 1904) and of Janet (Lawrie) Myles (died June 1915) of Biel, Stenton. Husband of Janet (Fairbairn) Myles of Tyninghame who he married in 1883 in Stenton.
Died on Active Service on 2 March 1915 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

David Myles – age 22 – Private (370117) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
David enlisted as Private (32237) and he was posted to the 16th Highland Light Infantry in France but he was transferred to the Royal Scots.
Born 1897 Stenton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Sergeant William Myles (died 1915) and of Janet (Fairbairn) Myles of Widows Row, Tyninghame.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.


JAMES NELSON
James Punton Nelson – age 24 – Corporal (S/3486) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James enlisted in Dunfermline in Fife and landed with the 7th Seaforths at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1894 in Tyninghame. Son of Thomas and Janet (Punton) Nelson of Linton Lodge Cottage, East Linton, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 2 November 1918 and buried in Preseau Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


JAMES PATON
James Turnbull Paton – age 19 – Private (133581) 1st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
James died in the 5th Casualty Clearing Station at Bihecourt near Maissemy.
Born 1899 in Stenton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of James and Mary (Melrose) Paton of Tyninghame.
Died of Wounds on 20 October 1918 and buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, France.

RICHARD A. PONTON
Richard Aitken Ponton – age 19 – Private (40800) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Richard and all of his siblings were born in Duns, Berwickshire but by 1901 the family were at Widows Row, Tyninghame where their father was an estate joiner. By 1918 the parents were back in Duns.
Born 1897 in Duns. Son of Richard and Isabella Graham (Ford) Ponton of 70 Castle Street, Duns.
Died of Wounds on 6 April 1917 and buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Duns Burgh and Parish War Memorial.


JOHN PUNTON
John Punton – age 19 – Private (41393) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John enlisted as Private (56733) and was posted to the 16th Highland Light Infantry in France but he was transferred to the 2nd RSF.
Born 1899 in Whitekirk. Son of Henry and Joan (Heriot) Punton of Lochhouses, Whitekirk.
Killed in Action on 17 August 1918 and buried in Le Peuplier Military Cemetery, Caestre, France.


ALEXANDER TAYLOR
Thought to be:
Alexander Taylor – age 24 – Private (1589) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander joined the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots at Haddington and joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in August 1915.
Born 1892 in Fintry, Stirlingshire. Son of Andrew McGilchrist Taylor and of Catherine (Anderson) Taylor of Fintry Stirlingshire and of The Lodge, Grange House, Grange Loan, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 23 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


FREDERICK THOMSON
Frederick Thomson – age 19 – Corporal (22716) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Frederick was a ploughman at Lochhouses, Whitekirk when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915 but due to illness he was evacuated home in November. Frederick returned to France in August 1916 but he was killed a month later on the Somme.
Born 1897 in Whitekirk. Son of Alexander and Rebecca (Neillings) Thomson of Lochhouses and of 6 Meadow Park, Haddington, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
