SECOND LIEUT. R.J. DEWAR, D.C.M., ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY
Robert Johnman Dewar, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 153rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Robert was educated at the Lasswade High Grade School in Midlothian and was an apprentice architects when he enlisted as Private (8760) in the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) in September 1914. He joined them in France in October 1915 and was awarded a DCM in early 1916 “For conspicuous devotion to duty. He was buried by the explosion of a mine, but dug himself out in twelve hours and got back to our lines. He then went out again with a N.C.O. to the crater, and rescued three other buried men within 30 yards of the enemy.”
Robert was commissioned in the RFA in October 1917.
Born 1895 in Edinburgh. Son of Peter McCall Dewar and Catherine Crawford (Johnman) Dewar of the Original Hotel, Roslin, Midlothian and of Elcho House, Aberlady.
Died of Wounds on 5 October 1918 and buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Roslin War Memorial, on the Roslin United Free Church memorial and on the Lasswade Higher Grade School memorial.


Pte. R.J.C. DUNLOP, LONDON IRISH RIFLES
Robert John Colquhoun Dunlop – age 29 – Rifleman (590818) 1/18th Battalion, London Regiment (London Irish Rifles)
In 1911 Robert was a footman at Luffness House, Aberlady and he gave his address as 294 Easter Road, Leith when he enlisted as Private (2537) in the London Regiment.
Born 1888 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire. Son of the late Robert Dunlop (died 1915 in Leith) and of the late Helen (Colquhoun) Dunlop (died 1892).
His uncle the Rev. Robert George Colquhon of Girvan was named as his next of kin in his will.
Missing in Action on 7 April 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PRIVATE C. EELES, ROYAL SCOTS
Charles Eeles – age 29 – Private (38170) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1888 in Aberlady. Son of the late William Eeles (died 1902) and of Jessie (Horne) Eeles of Aberlady. Brother of Francis Eeles, of High Street, Aberlady.
Missing in Action on 1 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.

CORPL. T. S. GLASGOW, TANK CORPS
Stanley Glasgow – age 24 – Corporal (76766) 1st Battalion, Tank Corps.
Stanley enlisted as Private (25099) in the 16th Royal Scots and transferred to the Tank Corps in France.
Born 1894 in Aberlady as Thomas Stanley Glasgow. Son of Thomas and Janet (Lockhart) Glasgow of Bickerton Place, Aberlady.
Missing in Action on 29 September 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window as T. Stanley Glasgow.


PRIVATE J.C. GUY, ROYAL SCOTS
John Cowan Guy – age 37 – Private (301737) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
John was a commercial traveller living with his family in Portobello, Midlothian when he enlisted as Private (4234) in the 3/7th Royal Scots in June 1916. He sailed to Egypt via Marseilles in April 1917 and joined to the 1/4th Battalion in June. John was wounded at Gaza on 11 November and evacuated to the 15th General Hospital where he died.
Born 1880 in Denny Stirlingshire. Son of the late Robert Guy (died 1913) and of Jane (Scott) Guy of Aberlady. Husband of Christina (Prentice) Guy of 6 Windsor Terrace, Portobello who he married in 1905 in Biggar, Lanarkshire.
Died of Wounds on 1 December 1917 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.


PRIVATE H. HANNAY, ROYAL SCOTS
Hugh Hannay – age 26 – Private (352969) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Hugh enlisted as Private (1794) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry and was posted to the Royal Scots in France.
Born 1891 in Haddington. Son of Robert Hannay and of the late Catherine (McDonald) Hannay who died in childbirth.
In 1901&1911 Hugh was living with his aunt Catherine (Hannay) Wilson and her family at Main Street, Aberlady and she was named as his legatee.
Killed in Action on 23 December 1917 and buried in Red Cross Corner Cemetery, Beugny, France.
Also named on the Athelstaneford Parish War Memorial together with his half-brother John Hannay Black Watch, who died on 25 September 1915.

LIEUT. COL. G.E. HOPE M.C., GRENADIER GUARDS
George Everard Hope, Military Cross – age 31 – Lieutenant Colonel, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Comanding 1/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
George was educated at Eton College and at Christ Church College, Oxford from where he was commissioned in the Royal Scots in March 1906. He transferred to the Grenadiers in September 1909. As a Lieutenant he landed with his battalion at Zeebrugge in October 1914. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery at the Battle at Kruseik on 24 October 1914.
As a Captain he was promoted to the rank of Acting Lieutenant-Colonel when he was appointed as Commanding Officer of 1/8th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers in June 1917. In September the battalion moved to the Belgian coast at Nieuport. They remained in this area until November.
Born 1886 in London. Son of the late Henry Walter Hope (died 1913) and of Lady Mary Catherine Constance (Primrose) Hope of Luffness, East Lothian and of Rankeillour, Fife. Husband of Margaret (Cockton) Hope who he married in 1911 in London.
Killed in Action on 10 October 1917 and buried in Ramscappelle Road Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window and on the Eton college and Christ Church College memorials.


PRIVATE. D. JACK, MACHINE GUN CORPS
David Jack – age 21 – Private (119458) 47th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
David enlisted as Private (S/22485) in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and was posted to the MGC in France.
Born 1896 in Whitekirk and Tynninghame, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Adam and Jane (Lindsay) Jack of Luffness Mains, Aberlady and of Stonelaws, Prestonkirk, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 23 March 1918 and buried in Cambrai East Military Cemetery, France
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.


PTE. R. JEFFREY, BLACK WATCH
Robert Jeffrey – age 29 – Private (40325) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert enlisted as Private (1735) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry and was posted as Private (5115) to the 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Black Watch in France. At some point he was transferred to the 1st Battalion.
Born 1888 in Clones, Kirkhill, Inverness-shire. Son of Elizabeth (Inglis) Jeffrey and the late Robert Jeffrey of 4 Bruntsfield Terrace, Edinburgh. Husband of Euphemia (Sinclair) Jeffrey of Loan Villa, Aberlady who he married in 1916 in Aberlady.
Missing in Action on 18 November 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

SERG. H.D. McINTOSH, BLACK WATCH
Henry Duncan McBeth McIntosh – age 33 – Corporal (315024) 13th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Henry was a game-keeper at The Kennels, Gosford Estate, Aberlady when he enlisted as Private (3924) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry. He landed with the 1/1st Battalion as dismounted troops at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli in September 1915. They were evacuated from Gallipoli and moved to Egypt in December where they became the 13th (Scottish Horse Yeomanry) Battalion of the Black Watch and moved to Salonica in northern Greece in October 1916. Henry died of disease.
Born 1884 Tenandry, Perthshire. Son of the late Archibald McIntosh (died 1908) and of the late Jane (Sowerby) McIntosh (died 1915) of Inch, Killiecrankie, Perthshire.
Died on Active Service on 4 March 1918 and buried in Lahana Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window and on the Tenandry Parish War Memorial.


L-CPL. P. MCPHAIL, ROYAL FUSILIERS
Peter McPhail – age 26 – Lance Corporal (1878) 23rd Battalion (1st Sportsman's) Royal Fusiliers.
Peter was a game-keeper at The Kennels, Gosford Estate, Aberlady when he enlisted as Private (5733) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in August 1914 but he was discharged as medically unfit in October. He obviously re-enlisted as he landed with his RF battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1890 in Colinton Edinburgh. Son of John and Margaret (Kellie) McPhail of Scotmill, Clachan, Kintyre, Argyllshire.
Died of Wounds on 2 August 1916 and buried in Dive Copse British Cemetery, Sailly-Le-Sec, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window and on the Clachan/Kilcalmonell War Memorial.


DRIVER. J. MURRAY, ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY
James Murray – age 33 – Gunner (75734) 132nd Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
James was a carter living at 81 New Street, Musselburgh when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised in April 1916 and posted to his battery in October James died in the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Abbeville.
Born 1884 in Aberlady as James Anderson Murray. Son of the late Margaret (Anderson) Murray (died 1893) and of the late William Murray (died 1914) and step-son of Christina (Taylor) Murray of East End Cottage, Aberlady who married William in 1895.
Died of Wounds on 11 May 1918 and buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.

PRIVATE. J. PEFFERS, A. AND S. HIGHLANDERS
John Peffers – age 30 – Private (S/16194) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
In 1911 John was a grocer's van-man living with his family at Red Row in Aberlady.
Born 1886 in Aberlady. Son of David and Helen (Burnside) Peffers of 4 Red Row, Aberlady.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme,France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.


PRIVATE T. RITCHIE, ROYAL SCOTS
Thomas Ritchie – age 24 – Private (34370) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
In 1911 Thomas was a ploughman living with his family at Fenton New Mains, Dirleton Parish and in 1915 he was at Spittal Farm, Longniddry, Aberlady.
Born 1893 in Gullane, Dirleton as Thomas Deans Ritchie. Son of the late George Ritchie (died 1907) and of Cecilia (Deans) Ritchie.
Missing in Action on 28 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.


SEC. LIEUT. R.S. SCARLETT, ROYAL SCOTS
Robert Stubbs Scarlett – age 21 – Second Lieutenant, 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Robert was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh before attending the East of Scotland Agricultural College. He enlisted in the 15th Royal Scots in September 1914 and as Private (17741) he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916. He was wounded on the first day of the battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916 and after he had recovered he was commissioned in May 1917.
Born 1896 in Edinburgh. Son of Thomas Aitken Scarlett and Emily Robertson (Stubbs) Scarlett of Aberlady and of 204 Newhaven Road, Leith, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 20 December 1917 and buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, France.


PRIVATE. J. SIBBALD, A. AND S. HIGHLANDERS
John Sibbald – age 29 – Private (10001) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John enlisted in January 1906 and served with the 2nd Argylls throughout. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914 but he was killed a month later.
Born December 1885 in Aberlady. Son of John Hadden Sibbald and Jane (Baillie) Sibbald of Harelaw Cottages, Longniddry and of 25 Hope Park, Haddington, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 10 November 1914 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.

PRIVATE. J.T. SINCLAIR, GORDON HIGHLANDERS
James Taylor Sinclair – age 23 – Private (S/9384) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James joined the 2nd Gordons in France in June 1915 and at some point transferred to the 1st Battalion.
Born 1894 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Alexander Edward Sinclair and of Jane (Taylor) Sinclair of the Wynd, Aberlady.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.


CAPT. W.C. TAYLOR, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY
William Currie Taylor – age 23 – Captain, Royal Field Artillery.
William was educated at Leith Academy and at Edinburgh University where, as a Student of Arts and Science, he graduated M.A. & B.Sc. in 1915 and where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps. He was commissioned in June 1915 and went to France in September. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1916 and to Captain in November 1917. William died of influenza and pneumonia at the family home in Leith.
Born 1895 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of William and Margaret Henderson (Currie) Taylor of Aberlady and of 6 Vanburgh Place, Leith.
Died on Service on 7 November 1918 and buried in Edinburgh (Rosebank) Cemetery.
Also named on the Leith Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.


PRIVATE J. TEMPLETON, ROYAL SCOTS
John Templeton – age 33 – Private (352293) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
John served his apprenticeship as a gardener in Lanark. He enlisted as Private (30577) in the Highland Light Infantry in June 1916 and was posted as Private (5624) to the 1/9th Royal Scots in France in November 1916.
Born 1883 in Lanark. Son of John and Agnes (McMorran) of Castlegate, Lanark. Husband of Janet Sanderson (Bird) Templeton who he married in 1910 in Aberlady.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Roclincourt Valley Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lanark War Memorial.

SERG. J. WILSON, A. AND S. HIGHLANDERS
James Wilson – age 21 – Sergeant (7304) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a gardener at Callendar Park, Falkirk when he enlisted in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915 as a Lance Corporal and was promoted to Sgt in April 1917.
Born 1896 in Aberlady. Son of the late George Glen Wilson and of Mary Ann or Marion (Bird) Wilson of 10 West End Cottages, Red Row, Aberlady.
Killed in Action on 10 July 1917 and buried in Ypres Town Cemetery Extension, Belgium.


PTE. J. WILSON, ROYAL MUNSTER FUSILIERS
James Wilson – age 26 – Private (5646) 1st Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers.
In 1911 James was a golf course green-keeper living with his family at East End Cottages, High Street, Aberlady. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915 and on 1 January 1916 they were evacuated from Gallipoli to Egypt. They sailed from Port Said to Marseilles for service in France in March 1916.
Born 1890 in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Peter and Christina (Hannay) Wilson of High Street, Aberlady.
Died of Wounds on 10 September 1916 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.


PTE. D. WYLLIE. BLACK WATCH
David Wyllie – age 29 – Private (291977) 1/7th (Fife) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
David was manager of his father's farm of The Heugh, North Berwick when he enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in June 1915. He was posted as Private (5640) to the 1/7th Black Watch in France a year later. David died in the 41st Casualty Clearing Station near Arras.
Born 1888 in Balerno, Currie, Midlothian. Son of Robert and Jane Law (Scott) Wyllie of The Heugh, North Berwick.
This may be the same Robert Wyllie who owned Lochhill Farm in Aberlady from 1916.
Died of Wounds on 24 April 1917 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.
Also named on the North Berwick War Memorial and on the North Berwick High School memorial.

1939 – 1945

THOMAS W.H.M. GILLIES, ROYAL NAVY
Thomas Hector William MacKay Gillies – age 34 – Second Officer, S.S. Berwickshire, Merchant Navy.
The “Berwickshire” was sailing in convoy from Liverpool to Madagascar with general cargo and a deck cargo of 70 tons of high octane motor spirit when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-861 east-southeast of Durban, South Africa. Eight crew members were lost. The master, 82 crew members and eleven gunners were picked up by HMS Norwich City and landed at Durban.
Born 1909 in the Isle Of Coll, Argyllshire. Son of the late Robert (died 1942) and of the late Mary (MacKay) Gillies (died 1935) of Aberlady. Brother of Robert Gillies of 17 The Pleasance, Aberlady.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 20 August 1944 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial.


JAMES SCOTT, ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS
James William McLeod Scott – age 25 – Driver (T/114533987) Royal Army Service Corps.
James, a paratrooper, was killed during a battlefield training exercise.
Born 1919 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian. Son of James McLeod Scott and Eliza Scott of Spittal Farm, Longniddry, Aberlady. Husband of Mary Robson (Tait) Scott of Longniddry who he married in 1942 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 16 April 1945 and buried in Aberlady Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial.


JOHN THOMSON, ROYAL ENGINEERS
John Thomson – age 23 – Sapper (2007038) 235 Field Park Company, Royal Engineers.
John had been a joiner and was serving in the Royal Engineers when he married in December 1940.
I suspect that he was a Prisoner of War when he died as the Allies did not land on Italy until September 1943.
Born 1919 in Aberlady. Son of Andrew and Helen (McKenzie)Thomson of The Pleasance, Aberlady. Husband of Janet Louden (Rintoul) Thomson of Elphinstone, East Lothian who he married in 1940 in Tranent, East Lothian.
Died on Service on 14 June 1943 and buried in Florence War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial.


WILLIAM BRACK WILSON, GENERAL SERVICE CORPS
William Brack Wilson – age 34 – Private (14564217) General Service Corps.
The General Service Corps was formed in February 1942 and from July army recruits were enlisted in the corps for their first six weeks so that their subsequent posting could take account of their skills and the Army's needs. William, a shop manager, was one of 27 soldiers killed in the Gordon Barracks, Old Machar during an air raid on Aberdeen.
Born 1908 in Aberlady. Son of the late George Young Wilson (died 1919) and of the late Elizabeth Brack (Crombie) Wilson (died January 1943) of Aberlady. Husband of Jean Robertson (Thomson) Wilson of Aberlady who he married in 1934 in Dirleton, East Lothian.
Died on Service on 21 April 1943 and buried in Aberlady Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial
