JAMES WM. SHARP
James William Sharp – age 21 – Private (200246) 2nd Battalion, Tank Corps.
James enlisted as Gunner (992) in the 2nd Battery, Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Field Artillery and he joined his battery in France in September 1915. From late 1916 these units began to transfer to the Tank Corps.
Born 1896 in Bolton. Son of the late Annie Douglas (Tod) Sharp (died 1896) and of John Johnstone Sharp, and step-son of Beatrice (Weir) Sharp who married John in 1898, of Ewingston Farm, Bolton,
Died of Wounds on 25 March 1918 and buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France.
Also named on the Bolton Parish Church memorial.


PETER WM. WATT
Peter William Watt – age 24 – Corporal (1477) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Peter was a gardener at Galloway House, Garlieston, Wigtownshire when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was accidentally drowned at El Arish in Egypt.
Born 1892 in Castlemains, Garvald Parish, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Marion (Young) Watt of Upper Bolton, Haddington and of Marvingstone, Bolton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Died on Active Service on 16 January 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Bolton Parish Church memorial and on the Sorbie Parish War Memorial in Garlieston.

1939 – 1945


FREDERICK CHARLES GIBSON
Frederick Charles Gibson – age 21 – Leading Seaman (D/JX 157254) H.M.S. Matabele, Royal Navy.
The destroyer “Matabele” was escorting a convoy from Iceland to Murmansk when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-454.
Born 1922 in Oldamstocks, East Lothian. Son of John William Gibson and of Allison Stella (White) Gibson of Marvingston, Bolton.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 17 January 1942 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Bolton Parish Church memorial.


LESLIE NINIAN LANDELS
Leslie Ninian Landels – age 29 – Squadron Leader (84695) 232 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Leslie joined the RAF in 1936 and was commissioned from Sergeant (740963) in August 1940. He flew with 32, 3 and 615 Squadrons during the Battle of Britain. In late 1941 he was posted to the Far East and was made CO of 232 Squadron in Malaya in January 1942.
The Japanese attacked Singapore on the morning of 20 January 1942, to raid Seletar airfield. Hurricanes from 232 Squadron scrambled from the field. The escorting Japanese fighters saw the Hurricanes diving after the bombers and climbed to intercept them. Leslie was shot down.
Born c.1913 in Durban, South Africa. Son of the late Leah Margaret (Thompson) Landels (died 1933) and of Ninian Landels of Upper Bolton.
Missing in Action on 20 January 1942 and named on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.
Also named on the Bolton Parish Church memorial.


CHARLES DAVID PEEL
Charles David Peel – age 21 – Flying Officer (90199) 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron, Fighter Command, Royal Air Force (Auxiliary Air Force)
Charles was educated at Cheltenham College before serving his apprenticeship as an accountant in Edinburgh in November 1937. He joined 603 Squadron as a Pilot Officer in February 1938 and was promoted to F/O in August 1939. Charles was based at RAF Montrose when his Spitfire failed to return from a patrol over the North Sea.
Born 1919 in Chelsea, London. Son of Willoughby Ewart Peel and of Alice Dalrymple (Hunter - Blair) Peel of Eaglescairnie, Bolton.
Missing in Action on 17 July 1940 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Bolton Parish Church memorial.


JAMES ALFRED ROSS
Also named on the Bolton Parish Church memorial,
but I cannot trace this man.
