Named on the Gullane War Memorial in East Lothian as:

JAMES A. STEWART
James Aitchison Stewart – age 26 – Lieutenant, 21 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.
James was educated at the Edinburgh Institution and at the Edinburgh Academy before becoming a . Student of Medicine at Edinburgh University from 1907 to 1911. He was commissioned in the Territorial 7th Royal Scots in December 1910 and transferred to the King's Own Scottish Borderers in August 1914. He became a Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 but was wounded in combat over Combles on 7 October 1916. James managed to land his aircraft but he died in the 2nd General Hospital in Le Havre.
Born 1890 in Edinburgh. Son of Dr. Robert Stewart and of Margaret Begbie (Aitchison) Stewart of Braemore, Gullane Hill and of George Square, Edinburgh. Husband of Olive Lizzie (Stratton) Stewart of Rushall Manor, Pewsey, Wiltshire who he married in 1915 in Pewsey.
Died of Wounds on 12 October 1916 and buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France.

Named on the Gullane War Memorial in East Lothian as:

GEOFFREY F. THATCHER
(I don't know why the given names are this way round)
Francis Geoffrey Thatcher, Military Cross – age 28 – Captain, Deputy Assistant Director of Medical Services, 40th Division, Royal Army Medical Corps.
Francis was educated at Edinburgh Academy before becoming a Student of Medicine at Edinburgh University from 1907 to 1913 from where he graduated M.B., Ch.B. He was commissioned in July 1914 and landed at Zeebrugge with the 2nd Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment in October 1914. He was wounded at Ypres and later served on the Hospital Ships “Emeraldes” and “Grantully Castle”, in the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne, and with the 25th and 136th Field Ambulances. He was promoted to Captain in March 1915 and was awarded a M.C. in May 1918.
Born 1890 in Edinburgh as Francis Geoffrey. Son of Charles Henry Thatcher and of Emily (Nelson) Thatcher of Milnthorp, Gullane Hill and of Corstorphine, Edinburgh. Husband of Gladys Maxwell (Grayson) Thatcher who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 1 June 1918 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.

W.C. TAYLOR, M.A. B.Sc.

Named on the Aberlady War Memorial in East Lothian as:

CAPT. W.C. TAYLOR, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY
William Currie Taylor – age 23 – Captain, Royal Field Artillery.
William was educated at Leith Academy and at Edinburgh University where, as a Student of Arts and Science, he graduated M.A. & B.Sc. in 1915 and where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps. He was commissioned in June 1915 and went to France in September. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1916 and to Captain in November 1917. William died of influenza and pneumonia at the family home in Leith.
Born 1895 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of William and Margaret Henderson (Currie) Taylor of Aberlady and of 6 Vanburgh Place, Leith.
Died on Service on 7 November 1918 and buried in Edinburgh (Rosebank) Cemetery.
Also named on the Leith Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

R. LUSK, M.A.

Named on the Bolton Parish War Memorial in East Lothian as:

ROBERT LUSK
Robert Lusk – age 25 – Private (201143) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Robert was educated at the Knox Institute in Haddington before becoming a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University from where he graduated M.A. In 1912. He enlisted as Private (4298) in November 1915 and joined his battalion in Egypt in July 1916. Robert served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1891 in Kinlochewe, Gairloch, Ross-shire. Son of James Christie Lusk and Jessie (Scott) Lusk of Bolton Schoolhouse, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Bolton Parish Church memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

J. DAWSON, M.A.

Named on the Haddington War Memorial in East Lothian as:

Sec.LIEUt. JAMES DAWSON. BLACK WATCH – R.H.
James Dawson – age 25 – Second Lieutenant. 3rd (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was educated at Broughton School in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University in 1910. He graduated MA in 1913 and was a school teacher when he enlisted as a Corporal in the 11th Gordon Highlanders in November 1914. He was posted as a Sergeant to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion of the Royal Scots and was commissioned in June 1915. He was posted to the 2nd Black Watch which moved from France to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra in December 1915. James was invalided home due to diabetes and died of tuberculosis at the family home in Edinburgh.
Born 1892 in Haddington. Son of John Patterson Dawson and of Ann (Craig) Dawson of 19 Avondale Place, Edinburgh.
Died on 2 April 1917 and buried in Aberlady Parish Churchyard, East Lothian. (CWG)
Also named on the Broughton School memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

T. TODRICK

Named on the Haddington War Memorial in East Lothian as:

CAPt. THOMAS TODRICK. ROYAL SCOTS
Thomas Todrick – age 34 – Captain 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was educated at the Knox Institute in Haddington and at Leys School in Cambridge before becoming a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1900. He became a Writer to the Signet in 1904. He was commissioned in the 7th Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Scots in March 1899 and appointed as Captain in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in April 1908. Thomas was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1880 in Haddington. Son of Robert and Marianne Somerville (Stevenson) Todrick of Haddington. Husband of Emma Brenda (List) Todrick of 30 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh who he married in 1910 in Blackheath, Greenwich, London.
Killed in Action on 14 December 1914 and buried in Bois-Grenier Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Knox Institute memorial, on the Leys School memorial, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen, and on the Murrayfield Golf Club memorial in Edinburgh.

W.F. TEMPLETON, M.A.

Named on the Tranent War Memorial in East Lothian as:

TEMPLETON, W.F.
William Fowler Templeton – age 29 – Captain 1/4th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William was educated at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of Arts at Edinburgh University in 1907. He graduated M.A. Hons. English in 1911 and became an English teacher at the Irvine Royal Academy, Ayrshire in 1912. He was commissioned in the Territorial 4th RSF in August 1914 and joined the 1/4th Battalion in Egypt in January 1916. He was promoted to Captain in February and served in Palestine until the battalion moved to France in April 1918. William was killed at Cambrai.
Born 1889 in Tranent. Son of David and Joan (Fowler) Templeton of 66 High Street, Tranent.
Killed in Action – 1 October 1918 and buried in Cantaing British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the George Heriot's School memorial and Roll of Honour, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen, on the Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre memorial and on the Irvine War Memorial.
