D. SCOTT, PTE
Duncan Scott – age 27 – Private (325447) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Duncan was a farm servant at Morham Mains, Haddington when he enlisted as Private (1606) in the 8th Royal Scots in December 1914. He joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in April 1915 but he was evacuated home with a knee injury in December 1916. He was posted to the 1st Royal Scots in Salonica in northern Greece in November 1917 where he suffered two bouts of malaria. In January 1919 he moved with the battalion to Southern Russia where in March he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and evacuated to the Bermondsey Military Hospital in London. Duncan was discharged from the army in July 1919 and awarded a Silver War Badge (B/274671) but he died at home in the following year.
Born 1892 in Saltoun, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Catherine (Mcdonald) Scott (died 1909) and of James Scott. Husband of Mary Main Urquhart (Reid) Scott of East Craig and of 22, Glenburn Road, North Berwick who he married in May 1917 in North Berwick.
Died on 15 January 1920 and buried in North Berwick Cemetery. (CWG)


J. A. SHAND, PTE
John Alexander Shand – age 41 – Private (37772) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
John was a gardener at Denovan House, Denny when he married in 1913 in Lasswade, Midlothian and he was employed at Old Abbey, North Berwick when he enlisted.
Born 1876 in Granton-on-Spey, Inverallan, Morayshire. Son of William and Mary (Stewart) Shand (died 1903) of Forres, Morayshire. Husband of Catherine (Drysdale or Young) Shand of Castlemains, Gifford, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 22 March 1918 and buried in Rumaucourt Communal Cemetery, France.


P. E. SHIEL, GR
Ernest Shiel – age 26 – Private (11624) 3rd Regiment, South African Infantry.
Ernest was employed as a shunter with the South African Railways when he enlisted in May 1916. He suffered almost immediately from duodenal perforation and died from cardiac failure, after an operation. A Lena Smith of Hamilton Cottage, North Berwickwas named as his next of kin,
Born December 1890 in North Berwick as Peter Shiel. Son of the late George and Annie Cockburn (Brown) Shiel (both died 1897) of Mount Leader Glebe North Berwick.
Died on Service on 5 May 1916 and buried in Potchefstroom Military Cemetery, South Africa.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick as Peter Ernest Shiel and on the North Berwick High School memorial as P. Ernest Shiel

J. SIBBALD, GR
James Sibbald – age 32 – Private (352232) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a coal carter when he married in 1911. He enlisted as Private (5562) in the Royal Scots.
Born 1885 in Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of James and Jemima (Williamson) Sibbald of Abbey Farm, North Berwick. Husband of Agnes (Williamson - formerly Mrs. James Swanson) Sibbald who he married in 1911 in North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 28 January 1918 and buried in Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


G. H. SIM, PTE
George Hedderwick Sim – age 29 – Private (228) 17th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, City of London Regiment.
George served his apprenticeship as a chemist and druggist in North Berwick before he joined the pharmaceutical companies of Allen and Hanburys and then of Burroughs Welcome in London. He enlisted in September 1914 and he landed with his battalion in France in November 1915.
Born 1886 in Dunkeld, Perthshire. Son of George and Julia (Hedderwick) Sim of Crossbrae, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 24 December 1915 and buried in Woburn Abbey Cemetery, Cuinchy, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick and on the North Berwick High School memorial.


J. D. SIMPSON, LT
James Duncan Simpson – age 28 – Lieutenant, 1st Tunnelling Company, Canadian Engineers.
James was educated at Ardrossan Academy before serving his apprenticeship as an electrical engineer in Glasgow. He emigrated to Canada in 1910 and was a member of the local militia, the 19th Lincoln Regiment, in St Catherines, Ontario when he enlisted in September 1915. He was commissioned and sailed with his Company in January 1916.
Born 1888 in West Kilbride, Ayrshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Duncan (Cunninghame) Simpson of Highfield, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 24 August 1916 and buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick, on the West Kilbride War Memorial and on the Ardrossan Academy memorial.

George James Smale – age 27 – Rifleman (R/4802) 11th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps
George died of arsenical dermatitis in the 39th General Hospital in Le Havre.
Born 1889 in Stoke Demerel/Devonport, Devon. Son of William Thomas Smale and of Cordelia Georgina (Sargent) Smale of 4 Forth Street, North Berwick and of 80 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh. Husband of Minnie A. (Martin) Smale of 7 Cedar Terrace, Phoenix Green, Hartley, Wintney who he married in 1913 in Christchurch, Hampshire.
Died on Active Service on 25 November 1917 and buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France.

Sydney Smale – age 23 – Private (806) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Sydney was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots. He was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1892 in Montrose, Forfarshire/Angus. Son of William Thomas Smale and of Cordelia Georgina (Sargent) Smale of 4 Forth Street, North Berwick and of 80 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 25 July 1916 and buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.


D. SMALL, L.CPL
David Miller Small – age 21 – Lance Corporal (14674) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
David was a gardener at Invereil House, North Berwick when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915 but he was killed just over four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1894 in Glasgow. Son of James and Elizabeth (Miller) Small of 40 Forth Street, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick.

J. A. E. SMITH, PTE
James Alexander Edington Smith – age 22 – Private (1163) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James served his apprenticeship as an engineer in Edinburgh before joining the works of Messrs Lobnitz & Co. in Renfrew. He enlisted from there in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in September 1914 and joined his battalion in France in November but he was wounded at Fleurbaix in December
James was evacuated to the military hospital at Netley in Hampshire but he died there.
Born 1893 in North Berwick. Son of James and Margaret Wilhelmina (Purves) Smith of The Vale, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 15 May 1915 and buried in North Berwick Old Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.


G. SOUTAR, GR
George Souter – age 19 – Private (203766) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
George enlisted as Private (1289) in the Territorial 2/8th Royal Scots. He was posted as Private (40072) to the 10th/11th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry in France before being transferred to the Camerons.
Born 1898 in Edinburgh. Son of William and Wilhelmina (Cockie) Souter of North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 28 March 1918 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.


C. STEWART, GR
Possibly:
Charles Stewart – age 27 – Lance Corporal (276937) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Charles enlisted in North Berwick.
Born 1890 in Edinburgh. Son of David and Jemima (Ramsay) Stewart of Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 25 November 1917 and buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.


T. STODDART, GR
Thought to be:
Thomas Stoddart – age 19 – Private (S/16036) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Thomas landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915. he was buried in Barts Alley Cemetery, Vermelles and re-interred after the war.
Born 1896 in Gifford/Yester, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Thomas Wilson Stoddart. Son of Thomas and Catherine (Sinclair) Stoddart of Nether Hailes Farm, East Linton and of Stenton, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 23 May 1916 and buried in Loos British Cemetery, France.

Alexander Davidson Stuart, Military Cross – age 31 – Lieutenant, 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Alexander was on the architectural staff of the London Post Office and was living at 81 Perham Road, West Kensington, London when he was commissioned in May 1915. He joined his battalion in France in February 1916 was promoted and in May 1917. He was awarded a MC in November 1917 “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a company. He took over the front line under most trying conditions and a heavy barrage fire, setting a fine example to his men
Born 1886 in North Berwick. Son of the late Alexander Stuart (died 1913) and of Jane (Gowans) Stuart of 76 High Street North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick and on the North Berwick High School memorial.


A. R. GRANT SUTTIE, 2ND LT
Archibald Ronald Grant-Suttie – age 20 – Lieutenant, "L" Battery, 15th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery.
Archibald was educated at Malvern College in Worcestershire and at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich from where he was commissioned in July 1915. He joined “D” Battery at Gallipoli and serve there until the withdrawal in January 1916. He joined “L” Battery in France in March 1916.
Born 1896 in North Berwick. Son of Robert and the Hon. Edith Mary (Dawnay) Grant-Suttie of Balgone, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 23 July 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Malvern College memorial and Roll of Honour.

M. TENNANT, 2ND LT
Mark Tennant – age 24 – Captain, Scots Guards.
Mark was educated at Eton and was commissioned in the Seaforth Highlanders in September 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant and landed with the 1/4th Seaforths at Le Havre in November 1914. He transferred to the Scots Guards in November 1915.
Born 1892 in North Berwick. Son of Francis John Tennant and of Annie Geraldine (Redmayne) Tennant of Hyndeford House, Fidra Terrace, North Berwick and of Innes House, Urquhart, Elgin, Morayshire.
Killed in Action on 16 September 1916 and buried in Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick and on the Urquhart Parish War Memorial in Moray together with his brother John Edward Tennant, Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross, age 51, Group Captain, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Died on Active service on 7 August 1941.

James Thomson – age 23 – Corporal (77162) 12th Battalion, Tank Corps.
James enlisted as Private (1023) in the Royal Scots and landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. Later he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and then the Tank Corps.
Born 1894 in North Berwick. Son of William and Isabella (Thorburn) Thomson of 42 Victoria Road, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 2 September 1918 and buried in Mory Abbey Military Cemetery, Mory, France.

William Thomson – age 24 – Private (43110) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
William served his apprenticeship as a golf-club maker in North Berwick and became a skilled golfer. He was the professional at a club near Slough when he returned home to enlist as Private (1243) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in September 1914. He was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in France in July 1916.
Born 1892 in North Berwick. Son of William and Isabella (Thorburn) Thomson of 42 Victoria Road, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 4 June 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


W. G. THORBURN, GR
William Gullane Thorburn – age 31 – Private (9087) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
William had served with the 1st Seaforths in India, including on the North West Frontier in 1908. He was probably a reservist as he landed with the 2nd Seaforths at Boulogne in August 1914.
Born 1885 in North Berwick. Son of the late John Thorburn (died 1913) and of Agnes (Gullane – formerly Mrs John Livingstone) (died 1903) Husband of Rebecca (Marr) Thorburn who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on1 July 1916 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps, France.

T. A. TYERS, GR
This man has no obvious link to North Berwick but is thought to be:
Thomas Arthur Tyers – age 34 – Private (32406) 2/4th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment.
“Arthur” enlisted as Private (M2/032577) in the Army Service Corps and went to France in March 1915. At some point he was transferred to the South Lancs and he died in the 2nd Australian Gerneral Hospital in Wimereux.
Born 1884 in Blaby, Leicestershire. Son of Henry James and Kate (Sarson) Tyers of Rearsby, near Leicester.
Died of Wounds on 31 January 1918 and buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
His brother John Roy Tyers also fell (27 May 1918) and they are both named on the Rearsby War Memorial.


J. VARNEY, LDG.BTN
James Varney – age 42 – Leading Boatman (157654/CH) Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
James joined the navy in 1893 and was posted as part of H.M. Coast Guard Service to the War Signal Station on Fidra Island, near North Berwick in January 1917. His hydrophone pulling boat capsized as it was landing and he was found drowned near Longskelly Point in the parish of Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Born 1875 in Woolwich, London. Son of the late Samuel Varney (died 1906) and of Emily (Purcell) Varney (died 1898) of Wollwich. Husband of Elizabeth Annie (Webb) Varney of 4 Lorne Lane, North Berwick who he married in 1904 in Woolwich.
Died on Active Service on 5 July 1917 and buried in North Berwick Cemetery. (CWG)

Clarence Walker – age 29 – Sergeant (18939) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Clarence was a solicitor formerly of Merchiston Grove, Edinburgh and of St. Catherine's Wynd, Kirkgate, Dunfermline when he married in 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916.
Born 1886 in North Berwick. Son of John Sheedan Walker and of Agnes (Peden) Walker of High Street, North Berwick. Husband of Agnes (Kerr) Walker of Henry Street, Langholm, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.

W. WALKER, PTE

Walter Walker – age 24 – Private (40062) 18th (Glasgow Yeomanry) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Walter enlisted as Private (1240) in the Royal Scots. He was transferred to the HLI in France.
Born 1893 in North Berwick as Walter Peden Walker. Son of John Sheedan Walker and of Agnes (Peden) Walker of High Street, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 26 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.


D. P. WATT, GR
David Paterson Watt – age 30 – Lance Corporal (S/17265) Depot, Cameron Highlanders.
David served his apprenticeship as a golf club maker in North Berwick and continued his trade in Edinburgh where he became the professional at Mortonhall in 1910. He was living at Millar Crescent in Edinburgh when he enlisted in February 1915. He joined the 1st Camerons in France in January 1916 but was evacuate home due to shell-shock in March. He returned to France in February 1917 and joined the 6th Camerons but he was badly wounded in April and evacuated to England where he died following amputation of a leg at the Westgate-On-Sea Hospital in Thanet, Kent.
Born 1885 in Dunbar, East Lothian. Son of James and Annie (Logan) Watt of Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Husband of Elizabeth (Horseburgh) Watt of 23 Millar Crescent and of 31 Marchmont Crescent, Edinburgh who he married in 1913 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1917 and buried in Edinburgh (Newington or Echo Bank) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Dirleton Parish War Memorial.


R. G. BROOMAN-WHITE, 2ND LT
Ronald George Brooman White – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers attached to 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Ronald was educated at Eton College in Berkshire and at Repton School in Derbyshire until 1909 before he trained as a chartered accountant. He was employed by a land agent in Montreal, Canada in 1913 and was home on holiday when war broke out. He applied for and gained a commissioned in August 1914.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh (also registered at Rhu, Dunbartonshire) Son of Richard Charles and Lily Geraldine Angela (Schuster) Brooman-White of Minto House, North Berwick, of Arddarroch, Garelochhead, Dunbartonshire, and of 11 Cambridge Square, Hyde Park, London.
Died of Wounds on 15 May 1915 and buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Garelochhead War Memorial and on the Eton and Repton School memorials.

David Anderson Whitehead – age 18 – Private (57326) 18th (Glasgow Yeomanry) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
David died in the 29th Casualty Clearing Station at Gezaincourt.
Born 1899 in North Berwick. Son of the late Margaret (Anderson) Whitehead (died 1902) and of Anthony Whitehead of 27 Melbourne Place, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 3 June 1918 and buried in Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, France.

John was serving with his battalion in Allahabad, India in August 1914. They returned to England in November and landed at Le Havre in December 1914. The battalion moved to Salonica in northern Greece in December 1915.
Born 1893 in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Margaret (Anderson) Whitehead (died 1902) and of Anthony Whitehead of 27 Melbourne Place, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 1 October 1916 and buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.


J. WILLIAMSON, PTE
John Williamson – age 39 – Private (40863) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John of 21 Forth Street, North Berwick enlisted as Private (1246) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in September 1914. He was posted to the 1st RSF in October 1916 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1877 in North Berwick. Son of the late Walter Williamson (died 1903) and of the late Jane (Charles) Williamson (died 1906) formerly of 21 Forth Street, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 13 November 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Andrew Clarke Wilson – age 41 – Sergeant (3420) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Andrew had served his apprenticeship as a tailor with his father in the High Street, North Berwick and was living at 9 Cheyne Street, Edinburgh when he enlisted in August 1914. He had previously served with the Royal Scots as Private (6960) from November 1899 until September 1902, including in the South Africa War, until he purchased his discharge from the army. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915 as a Corporal and was promoted to Sergeant in September. Andrew died in the 14th General Hospital at Wimereux.
Born 1875 in Carluke, Lanarkshire. Son of the late Thomas Wilson (died 1913) and of the late Jane (Clarke) Wilson (died 1915) of High Street, North Berwick. Husband of Alexandrina (McLean) Wilson of Cheyne Street and of 23, Fetter Row, Edinburgh who he married in 1904 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 18 July 1916 and buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.


D. WYLLIE, GR
David Wyllie – age 29 – Private (291977) 1/7th (Fife) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
David was manager of his father's farm of The Heugh, North Berwick when he enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in June 1915. He was posted as Private (5640) to the 1/7th Black Watch in France a year later. David died in the 41st Casualty Clearing Station near Arras.
Born 1888 in Balerno, Currie, Midlothian. Son of Robert and Jane Law (Scott) Wyllie of The Heugh, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 24 April 1917 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.


T. WYNN, DR
Thomas Wynne – age 44 – Driver (T4/061893) 33rd Reserve Park, Army Service Corps.
Thomas was a carter living at 4 High Street, North Berwick when he enlisted in March 1915. He went to France in April 1915.
Born 1877 in North Berwick. Son of the late John Wynn (died 1903) and Margaret (Monaghan) Wynn (died 1907) of North Berwick. Husband of Mary (Farrell) Wynn of 4 High Street, North Berwick who he married in 1904 in Dalkeith, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 22 March 1918 and buried in Bleuet Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

J. YATES, LT
John Carrington Yates οΏ½ age 27 οΏ½ Lieutenant 160th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
John was a seed merchant in Didsbury, Lancashire when he enlisted as Private (775) in the Territorial Cheshire Yeomanry in November 1912 and was a corporal with the 2/1st regiment in August 1914. He was discharged as no longer fit for war service in April 1915 after he had broken his leg in a motor cycle accident. However he obtained a commission in the East Lancashire Brigade of the RFA in December 1915 and went to France in January 1917. He was promoted in July 1917.
Born 1891 in Didsbury, Chorlton, Lancashire. Son of the late William George Yates (died 1891) and of Lizzie Carrington (Smith) Yates of Belfield Road, Didsbury. Husband of Elizabeth Anderson (Bertram) Yates of 20 Balfour Street, North Berwick who he married in 1916 in Portobello, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Didsbury War Memorial.


J. YOUNG, L.CPL
John Young οΏ½ age 22 οΏ½ Lance Corporal (13868) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots.
John served his apprenticeship as a grocer in Haddington and was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots. He was employed in North Berwick when he was mobilised in August 1914 and he was posted to the 1st Battalion in France in January 1915.
Born 1893 in Haddington, East Lothian. Son of James and Margaret (Bradford) Young of 76 Hardgate, Haddington and of Lime Kiln Cottages, Longniddry, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 30 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Haddington Parish War Memorial together with his brother Robert Young.

There are three further Commonwealth War Graves in North Berwick Cemetery for men who died while serving in and around the town.

William Cavin – age 24 – Private (54843) 3rd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry
Born c.1894
Died 06 November 1918 of pneumonia in North Berwick
Sister Sarah

John Dalrymple – age 30 – Private (67363) 3rd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry
Born 1888 in Shotts, Lanarkshire.
Died 10 November 1918 in Edington Hospital, North Berwick.
Husband of Annie C. Dalrymple.

James Hutchison McLean – age 19 – Private (376200) 1/10th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1898 in Greenock
Son of Archibald and Margaret McLean of 89 Drygate Street, Glasgow.
Died 22 August 1917 Drowned at Scoughhall Beach, Seacliff, Whitekirk and Tynninghame.

1939 - 1945

JAMES C. ADAMS
James Campbell Adams – age 20 – Aircraftman 2nd Class (630069) 38 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
James was the Wireless Operator and Air Gunner on his Wellington bomber which had taken off from RAF Marham in Norfolk for a raid on enemy troops in the Diksmuide region. The aircraft crashed at Veurne near Koksijde.
Born 1920 in North Berwick. Son of Isaac and Catherine Campbell (Bain) Adams of North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 30 May 1940 and buried in Veurne Communal Cemetery Extension, Belgium


JAMES HOGG ADAMS
James Hogg Adams – age 30 – Leading Stoker (C/KX 83751) H.M.S. Veteran, Royal Navy.
The destroyer “Veteran” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-404 in mid-Atlantic while escorting a convoy.
Born 1912 in North Berwick. Son of James and Martha Blyth (Tunney) Adams of Victoria Road, North Berwick. Husband of Winifred Wood (Logan) Adams of Dudley, Worcestershire who he married in 1940 in Gullane, Dirleton, East Lothian.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 26 September 1942 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.


KENNETH ALEXANDER
Kenneth Alexander – age 21 – Pilot Officer (106162) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Ferry)
Kenneth was educated at Edinburgh Academy and joined the RAF in July 1940. He was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (1058524) in September 1941 but was killed a month later while serving with a Ferry Squadron at RAF Kemble in Gloucestershire when his aircraft crashed near Cirencester during a training flight.
Born 1920 in Edinburgh. Son of Harold and Isabella Ballantyne (Dods) Alexander of Edinburgh and of Injebreck, North Berwick.
Died on Service on 13 October 1941 and buried in Edinburgh (Liberton) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick and on the Edinburgh Academy memorial.

ROBERT M. B. ARCHIBALD
Robert Miller Buchanan Archibald – age 27 – Private (3054433) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots
The 2nd Royal Scots had been in Hong Kong since January1938. Robert was captured at the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese in December 1941. At the end of September 1942 about 1800 prisoners and 700 Japanese troops were being transported to Japan when their ship, the “Lisbon Maru”, was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Grouper near Shanghai, China. All of the Japanese personnel were evacuated before the ship began to sink and many of the prisoners were shot as they tried to escape.
Born 1915 in Edinburgh. Son of James Forrest Archibald and of Elizabeth Stewart (Buchanan) Archibald of 21 Melbourne Place, North Berwick.
Died on Service between 1 and 2 October 1942 and named on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong, China.


JOHN VIVIAN BAILEY
John Vivian Bailey – age 34 – Major (41074) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was educated at Wellington College in Berkshire before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in January 1929. He served in India and in China in the 1930's and was with the BEF in France in 1939 until the evacuation in June 1940. After a spell in the War Office he rejoined his battalion and accompanied it to Madagascar. They then fought in Persia and Iraq before taking part in the landings on Sicily where John was killed during the attack on Priola.
Born 1909 in Farnham, Surrey. Son of the late Brigadier-General The Hon. Vivian Telford Bailey, C.M.G., D.S.O. (died 1938) and of Mirabel Stuart (Towers-Clark) Bailey of Tantallon Lodge, North Berwick. Husband of Evelyn Diana (Noel) Bailey of Hopton Hall, Great Yarmouth and of Long Sutton, Somerset who he married in 1936 in Cromer, Norfolk.
Killed in Action on 12 July 1943 and buried in Syracuse War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.
Also named on the Wellington College Memorial and Roll of Honour.

ISABELLA N. BAILLIE
Isabella Nisbet Baillie – age 31 – Civilian
Isabella had been in Singapore for about three years at the outbreak of war. She became a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse until ordered to evacuate. HMS Kuala an auxiliary patrol boat sailed from Singapore on Friday 13 February 1942 with approximately 500 evacuees on board – men, women and children. She anchored the following morning at Pompong Island in company with HMS Tien Kwang, an auxiliary anti-submarine vessel but they were spotted by Japanese aircraft and bombed.
Born 1911 in North Berwick. Daughter of George and Janet (Nisbet) Baillie. Wife of Corporal Stanley Marlow Baillie, Scots Guards who she married in 1936 in Aldershot, Hampshire.
Killed by Enemy Action on 14 February 1942.
(Stanley Marlow Baillie, born 1911 in Haddington, was a Staff Sergeant (2693826) with the Provost Staff Corps when he became a PoW in Singapore. He was liberated in September 1945)


JAMES M. BLAIR
Possibly:
James Michael Blair – age 21 – Lieutenant (240066) 15th (Scottish) Regiment, Reconnaissance Corps, Royal Armoured Corps.
James was educated at Edinburgh Academy before going on to Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1940. He was commissioned from there in July 1942.
Born c. 1923 in Calcutta, India. Son of James Richard Blair and Alice Jane Hood (Carrie) Blair of St Ninian's Terrace, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 16 July 1944 and buried in Ryes War Cemetery, Bazenville, France.


DAVID ALISTAIR BRUCE
David Alistair Bruce – age 29 – Flying Officer (80213) 112 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
David was commissioned from Sergeant (778654) in December 1941 and was promoted to FO in October 1942. He was shot down over the Mediterranean that month but made it back to shore. In March 1943 the Squadron were flying P-40 Kittyhawk fighter/bombers from Nefatia in Tunisia when David was shot down by a German fighter while providing top cover for strafing attacks by other Kittyhawks in the Foum-Tataouin Area of Tunisia.
Born 1914 in Lancaster. Son of Colonel George David Bruce and of Norah Madeleine (Ogilvie) Bruce of Sevenoaks and of North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 10 March 1943 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
