JAMES GRAY – name added on a new panel on the memorial in October 2019 but his connection to Dunbar is not known.
James Gray – age 33 – Private (3327231) 10th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment)
Born c.1911 in Glasgow. Son of John and Alice Gray, of Glasgow; husband of Annie Gray, of Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 28 June 1944 and buried in Brouay War Cemetery, France.


G. W. R. GRIFFIN – name added to the main memorial in October 2018.
George William Ryland Griffin – age 25 – Captain (197273) Wiltshire Regiment
“Bill” was commissioned in July 1941 and was based at the Bellevue Hotel in Dunbar in 1942.
Born 1918 in Rochford, Essex. Son of the late Howard William Griffin (died 1922) and of the late Ada Mary (Wood) Griffin (died 1942) of Handsworth, Birmingham. Husband of Amore (Allen) Griffin of Altmohr, Dunbar who he married in 1943 in Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 10 August 1944 and buried in Tilly-Sur-Seulles War Cemetery, France.


PHILIP L. GULLANE
Philip Leyden Gullane – age 27 – Private (3063596) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
The 2nd Royal Scots had been in Hong Kong since January1938. Philip was captured at the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese in December 1941.
Born 1914 in Dunbar. Son of the late William Gullane and of Christina (Leyden) Gullane of Parsonspool, Dunbar.
Died of Wounds on 28 January 1942 and buried in Stanley Military Cemetery, Hong Kong, China,


JAMES GULLEN
James Wiseman Gullen – age 28 – Sergeant (994275) 153 (The Leicestershire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
The Regiment, as part of the Guards Armoured Division, landed at Normandy in late June 1944 equipped with Sexton self-propelled 25-pounder guns.
Born 1915 in Dunbar. Son of John and Margaret Thomson (Wiseman) Gullen of Belhaven, Dunbar. Husband of Elizabeth Jane. (Darling) Gullen of Dunbar who he married in 1941 in Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 10 August 1944 and buried in St. Charles De Percy War Cemetery, France.

JAMES HASTIE
James Hastie – age 31 – Stoker 2nd Class (P/KX 131920) H.M.S. Berkeley, Royal Navy.
James was a butcher, living at Writer's Court in Dunbar. when he married in 1936.
The destroyer “Berkeley” escorted the raiding force for the Dieppe landings. She came under air attack off Dieppe and received two direct hits. The ship's back was broken causing severe flooding of all the forward compartments and the ship was abandoned.
Born 1910 in Dunbar. Son of John and Jessie Hastie of Dunbar. Husband of Jessie Lees (Hastie) Hastie of Dunbar who he married in 1936 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 19 August 1942 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


RUPERT A. HENDY
Rupert Arthur Septon Hendy – age 39 – Lance Bombardier (1057131) 85 Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Rupert was a postman in Dunbar. His Regiment was formed in September 1941 and sailed from the Clyde in November 1941 bound for the Middle East but they were diverted to defend Singapore when Japan declared war in December. He was made a prisoner after the fall of Singapore in February 1942 and he was sent to work on the Burma-Siam railway. Rupert died of disease at the Tasao No.2 camp and was buried there. He was re-interred in March 1946.
Born 1905 in Cairo, Egypt. Son of William James Hendy (died 1942) and of Elizabeth Caroline Ellen (Pankhurst) Hendy.
In 1939 William (a retired Army pensioner) and Elizabeth were at MacKenzie Road, Salford, Manchester.
Husband of Annie (Johnstone) Hendy of 24 Summerfield Road, Dunbar who he married in 1929 in Dunbar.
Died on Service on 7 January 1944 and buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand.


JAMES B. HERBERT
James Brown Herbert – age 24 – Able Seaman (P/JX 144456) H.M.S. Beverley, Royal Navy.
The American built destroyer USS Branch was transferred to the Royal Navy and renamed in October 1940. The “Beverly” had been badly damaged in a collision with a cargo ship and had taken a station to the rear of the convoy when she was torpedoed and sunk in mid-Atlantic by the German submarine U-188.
Born 1919 in Dunbar. Son of Jane Herbert of Dunbar.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 11 April 1943 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

ALEXANDER HERKESS
Not listed by CWGC – probably discharged from the military before his death.
Alexander Herkess was born in 1917 at Victoria Street, in Dunbar.
He was the son of Alexander and Agnes Blyth (Whitelaw) Herkess of Doon Avenue, Dunbar. He was a stone mason in Dunbar when he married Jean (Gordon) Herkess of The Square, Cockburnspath in January 1942 in Cockburnspath.
Alexander, a bricklayer aged 28, died of lung cancer in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh on 12 January 1946.
Also named on the Cockburnspath Parish War Memorial.


JAMES HERKES
James Herkes – age 19 – Marine (PLY/X 3697) H.M.S. Repulse, Royal Marines.
The battlecruiser “Repulse” and the battleship “Prince of Wales” were attacked and sunk by Japanese bombers and torpedo bombers off the coast of Malaya.
Born 1922 in Dunbar. Son of Thomas and Janet (Common or Westwood) Herkes of Dunbar.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 10 December 1941 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


ROBERT HEUGH
Robert Heugh – age 22 – Sergeant (1568930) 78 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Robert was an air gunner on his Halifax bomber which had taken off from RAF Breighton in Yorkshire for a day-time raid on the Scholven-Buer synthetic oil plant in Germany. The aircraft collided in the air with another 78 Squadron Halifax, both aircraft crashing at Oude-Tonge on Overflakkee Island, Holland.
Born 1922 in Dunbar. Son of Archibald and Mary Kerr (Collin) Heugh of Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 6 October 1944 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.


WILLIAM HEWAT
William Hewat – age 34 – Sergeant (7589346) Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
William was employed as a joiner when he enlisted. He died in a Nottingham hospital after suffering a reaction to an injection for a skin condition.
Born 1909 in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. Son of Henry and Margaret (Thomson) Hewat, formerly of the Dunglass Estate. Husband of Jeannie (McKenzie) Hewat of 110 High Street, Dunbar who he married in 1932 in Dunbar.
Died on Service on 30 October 1943 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

JAMES F. HUGHES
James Finlay Hughes – age 25 – Sergeant (965678) 77 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
James was educated at Rutherford College in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and at Berwickshire High School in Duns before the family moved in the mid-1930's to Dunbar where James assisted his father at the Railway Hotel. Later he became manager of Eyemouth Picture House in Berwickshire, living with his uncle George Young Hughes of the Whale Inn, Harbour Road, Eyemouth. He joined the RAF in 1939 and he was the pilot of a Whitley bomber which had taken off from RAF Topcliffe in Yorkshire for a raid on Hamburg but the aircraft crashed into the North Sea.
Born 1916 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Son of Walter and Mary (Finlay) Hughes of Eyemouth, of Dunbar and of North Berwick. Husband of Margaret Knox (Graham) who he married in March 1941 in Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 2 May 1941 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Eyemouth War Memorial, on the Eyemouth Parish Church memorial and on the Berwickshire High School memorial.


HUGH HUME
Hugh Hume – age 41 – Aircraftman 1st Class (1554179) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Hugh had been a greenkeeper in Dunbar before he enlisted. He died of tuberculosis in Bangour Hospital, Uphall, West Lothian.
Born 1904 in Edinburgh. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Tennent) Hume formerly of North Berwick. Husband of Robina (Doyle or Scott) Hume of West Barns, Dunbar who he married in 1936 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 13 October 1945 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)


AGNES JOHNSTONE – name added to the main memorial.
Agnes Claire Johnstone – age 25 – Private (W/171656) Auxiliary Territorial Service.
Agnes had been a dental assistant before the war and was a telephonist in the ATS. She died of tuberculosis in Bangour Hospital, Uphall, West Lothian.
Born 1916 in Dunbar. Daughter of John and Margaret (Duncan) Johnstone of 28 Lammermuir Crescent, Dunbar.
Died on Service on 15 January 1942 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

JAMES G. JOHNSTON
Possibly:
James Guy Johnston – age 28 – Flying Officer (135076) 103 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James was commissioned from Corporal (656575) in May 1942 and was promoted to FO in November 1942. He was the pilot of a Lancaster bomber which had taken off from RAF Elsham Wolds in Lincolnshire for a raid on Nurnberg. The aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed at Bilkheim. The crew were re-interred at Rheinberg in May 1947.
Born 1915 in Kirknewton & East Calder, Midlothian where his father was a police constable. Son of William and Mary (Guy) Johnston of Eglinton, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
Killed in Action on 31 March 1944 and buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.


WILLIAM JOWITT
William Jowitt – age 19 – Trooper (14563845) 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps.
In late 1943, the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry was assigned to the 51st (Highland) Infantry Division, where it served as the divisional reconnaissance regiment until the end of the war.
Born 1925 in Cramond, Edinburgh as William Henry Jowitt. Son of William Henry Jowitt and of Janet Marshall (Aitchison) Jowitt of Springfield Terrace, West Barns, Dunbar who had married in 1924 in Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 27 November 1944 and named on the Groesbeek Memorial, Netherlands.


MURDOCH MACPHERSON
Murdoch Macpherson – age 21 – Private (5570413) 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.
Murdoch was resident in Southampton when he joined up and he was posted to his battalion in Burma. The battalion had been based around Rangoon at the outbreak of war and from March 1942 it provided the rear guard for the British retreat from Rangoon to India during the Japanese conquest of Burma.
Born 1922 in Edinburgh. Son of George Macpherson, and of Rose (Sinclair) Macpherson of 88 Lammermuir Crescent, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 1 May 1942 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar.

GEORGE MAIN
George Main – age 24 – Gunner (976679) 80 (The Scottish Horse) Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery.
The 80th Medium Regiment served as part of 6th Army Group Royal Artillery in the Italian Campaign.
Born 1920 in Dunbar. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Main of Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 9 February 1944 and buried in the Anzio War Cemetery, Italy.


COLIN A. MALCOLM – name added to the main memorial.
Colin Alistair Malcolm – age 26 – Sergeant (523441) 42 Squadron, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force.
Colin was the radio operator on his Beaufort torpedo-bomber which had taken off from RAF Wick to attack the German battleship “Scharnhorst” off the Norwegian coast. As torpedoes were not available a dive bombing attack was carried out using two bombs. The nine Beauforts encountered German fighters protecting the battleship and only four returned.
Born 1914 in Dunbar. Son of Alexander and Mildred Martha (Penikett) Malcolm of Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 21 June 1940 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.


ROBERT A. MALCOLM

ROBERT B. MARR
Robert Bathgate Marr – age 20 – Seaman (LT/JX 375261) H.M. Trawler Ellesmere, Royal Naval Patrol Service.
The armed anti-submarine trawler “Ellesmere” was escorting a convoy of 21 landing craft north-west of Brest enroute to Malta when the vessel disappeared in a violent explosion. She had been hit by a torpedo from the German submarine U-1203.
Born 1924 in Govan, Glasgow. Son of Robert and Margaret Main (Bathgate) Marr of Dunbar.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 February 1945 and named on the Lowestoft Naval Memorial, Suffolk.

WILLIAM McDONALD
William McDonald – age 21 – Engineman (LT/KX 152084) H.M. Motor Minesweeper 38, Royal Naval Patrol Service.
William died of illness.
Born 1922 in Dunbar as Macdonald. Son of James and Margaret McDonald; grandson of Mrs. J. McDonald of Belhaven, Dunbar.
Died on Active Service on 24 July 1944 and buried in Naples War Cemetery, Italy.


ANGUS F. McPHERSON
Angus Fowler McPherson – age 38 – Sapper (1989118) 708 General Construction Company, Royal Engineers.
Angus was a traction engine driver, living at Edinburgh Road, Belhaven, Dunbar, when he married in 1936. The 708 Company arrived in Egypt in August 1940 and were posted to Greece.
Born c.1902 in Inverness. Son of Angus Fowler McPherson and Mary (Ross) McPherson. Husband of Ellen Cleghorn (Purves) McPherson of Belhaven, Dunbar who he married in 1936 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 24 April 1941 and named on the Athens Memorial, Greece.


DENNIS MOORE - DIED 25th SEPTEMBER 1949 – name added to the main memorial.
Dennis Moore – age 19 – Guardsman (22022534) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Dennis had been a gardener at Knockenhair House in Dunbar. He was one of three Scots Guards killed during a fire-fight with a group of bandits they had ambushed during the Malayan Emergency.
Born 28 September 1929 in Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1949 and buried in Cheras Road Christian Cemetery, Kuala Lumpu, Malaya.
Also named on the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire.

JAMES NAIRN
James Nairn – age 24 – Leading Aircraftman (1372306) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James died of tuberculosis in the Military Hospital at Baragwanath, Johannesburg.
Born 1922 in Fogo, Berwickshire. Son of John James Nairn and Barbara Rathie (Coltherd) Nairn of South Belton, Dunbar. Husband of Margaret (Goodhind) Nairn who he married in Leeds in 1945.
Died on Service on 8 February 1947 and buried in Johannesburg (West Park) Cemetery, South Africa.


ARTHUR PAXTON
Arthur Paxton – age 23 – Corporal (630239) Royal Air Force.
Arthur was made a prisoner of war of the Japanese on Java in March 1942. In April 1943 he was moved with other prisoners to Haroekoe Island to construct an airfield. Arthur, like many of his comrades, died of disease. He was re-interred at Ambon in February 1947.
Born 1919 in Dunbar as Arthur James Paxton. Son of the late James Paxton (died 1929) and of Adeline (Beveridge) Paxton of Dunbar.
Died on Service on 6 June 1943 and buried in Ambon War Cemetery. Indonesia.

HENRY PAXTON

Henry Paxton – age 30 – Corporal (3189375) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 6th KOSB landed on the Normandy beaches on the 15 June 1944, and took part in the battles around Caen and the River Odon. Henry was killed near Gavrus and was re-interred in November 1945.
Born December 1913 in Dunbar. Son of the late James Paxton (died 1929) and of Adeline (Beveridge) Paxton of Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 16 July 1944 and buried in St. Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux, France.

ADAM PEFFERS
Adam Peffers – age 31 – Corporal (3051813) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
The 2nd Royal Scots had been in Hong Kong since January1938. Adam was captured at the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese in December 1941. At the end of September 1942 about 1800 prisoners and 700 Japanese troops were being transported to Japan when their ship, the “Lisbon Maru”, was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Grouper near Shanghai, China. All of the Japanese personnel were evacuated before the ship began to sink and many of the prisoners were shot as they tried to escape.
Born 1909 in Humbie, East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Brydon) Peffers of Mainshill, Haddington.
Died on Service between 1 and 2 October 1942 and named on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong, China.


JOHN A. RENNIE
John Anton Rennie – age 27 – Pilot Officer (61260) 220 Squadron, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (993113) in February 1941 and in April his squadron moved to RAF Wick in the north of Scotland to focus on attacks on coastal shipping and harbours in Norway. He was the pilot of a Lockheed Hudson when it collided with an Anson of 48 Squadron during take off from RAF Stornoway in the Western Islands. John was killed but his crew survived.
Born 1914 in Stockton, County Durham. Son of John and Hilda (Cowley) Rennie of South Belton, Dunbar.
Died on Active Service on 8 August 1941 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)


IAN J. ROBERTSON
Ian James Robertson – age 21 – Sergeant (545441) 99 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
Ian was a pilot of a Wellington bomber which had taken off from RAF Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire for a raid on Genoa in Italy. The aircraft crashed off the Dutch coast on the return leg.
Born 1920 in Edinburgh. Son of Peter and Elizabeth (McRonald) Robertson of Broxburn, Dunbar. Husband of Jessie Bain (Macvicar) Robertson of Billingham, County Durham who he married in June 1941 in Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 29 September 1941 and buried in Texel (Den Burg) Cemetery, Netherlands.

JAMES ROBERTSON
James Robertson – age 31 – Private (7585336) 14 Army Field Workshop, Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
James was a joiner, living at 151 High Street, Dunbar when he married in 1936. In late May 1940, nineteen men from the RAOC lost their lives in the Audruicq/Zutkerque area of northern France, just south-east of Calais. Seven are buried in Audruicq churchyard and twelve in Zutkerque churchyard. All were members of the 14th Army Field Workshop which was making its way to Dunkirk.
Born 1908 in Dunbar. Son of Robert and Jane (Robertson) Robertson. Husband of Elizabeth Diey (Neilson) Robertson of Edinburgh who he married in 1936 in Dunbar.
Killed in Action between 21 and 23 May 1940 and buried in Zutkerque Churchyard, France.


PETER ROBERTSON
Peter Robertson – age 22 – Able Seaman (D/SSX 13958) H.M. Trawler Agate, Royal Navy.
The “Agate” was part of a convoy escort when in poor visibility she ran aground and was wrecked on the Haisburgh Sands off Cromer, Norfolk. Seven ships of the convoy were also lost.
Born 1920 in Dunbar as Peter Brown Robertson. Son of James and of Jane Watt (Hunter) Robertson of Dunbar.
Died on Active Service on 6 August 1941 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


WILLIAM ROBERTSON
William Collins Robertson – age 31 – Private (13075876) 85 Company, Pioneer Corps.
85 Company served with the 6th Beach Group assisting the units landing on Sword Beach on D Day, 6 June 1944.
Born 1913 in Dunbar. Son of Christopher and Elizabeth (Collins) Robertson of Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 7 June 1944 and buried in Hermanville War Cemetery, France.

ARTHUR L. SARGEANT
Arthur Leonard Sargeant – age 39 – Warrant Officer Class II (1052800) Malaya Training Wing, Royal Artillery.
Before 1939, the Kranji area was a military camp and at the time of the Japanese invasion of Malaya, it was the site of a large ammunition magazine. On 8 February 1942, the Japanese crossed the Johore Straits in strength, landing at the mouth of the Kranji River within two miles of the place where the war cemetery now stands. On the evening of 9 February, they launched an attack between the river and the causeway. During the next few days fierce fighting ensued, in many cases hand to hand, until their greatly superior numbers and air strength necessitated a withdrawal.
Born 1905 in Dartford, Kent. Son of the late Alfred Harry Sargeant (died 1919) and of Matilda Unice (Boston) Sargeant. Husband of Mary Thomson (Hastie) Sargeant of Wickham Lane, Plumstead, Woolwich, London and of Dunbar who he married in 1926 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 14 February 1942 and buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.


JOHN SMAIL
John Smail – age 36 – Able Seaman, S.S. Empire Dew (Greenock) Merchant Navy.
The “Empire Dew” sailing from the Tyne to Canada was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-48 north of the Azores. 20 crew members and three gunners were lost.
Born 1904 in Dunbar as John Phillips Smail. Son of the late John Phillips Smail (died 1923) and of Margaret (Miller) Smail of 55 Lammermuir Crescent, Dunbar.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 11 June 1941 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.


ALEXANDER SMITH
Alexander Smith – age 24 – Ordinary Seaman (D/JX 238345) H.M.S. Repulse, Royal Navy.
The battlecruiser “Repulse” and the battleship “Prince of Wales” were attacked and sunk by Japanese bombers and torpedo bombers off the coast of Malaya.
Born 1917 in Dunbar as Alexander Ross Smith. Son of Charles and Rebecca (Marr) Smith of Dunbar.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 10 December 1941 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

HUGH SMITH
Hugh Smith – age 38 – Sergeant (1667047) 7 Battery, 4 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Hugh died of tuberculosis at his home in Dunbar.
Born 1905 in Dunbar. Son of the late Elizabeth (Paterson) Smith (died 1938) and of Robert Smith of Dunbar. Husband of Margaret (Henderson) Smith of 5 Victoria Place, Dunbar who he married in 1931 in Edinburgh.
Died on 22 April 1943 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)


THOMAS E. SMITH
Thomas Edgeley Smith – age 18 – Aircraftman 2nd Class (626998) 149 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
Thomas was an air gunner on his Wellington bomber which had taken off from RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk to drop leaflets on Bremen. An engine failed and the aircraft crashed at Burnt Fen, north of the airfield.
Born 1921 in Dunbar. Son of John and Mary Thain (Hutton) Smith of Dunbar.
Died on Active Service on 2 March 1940 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)


THOMAS J. SONGHURST
Thomas James Songhurst – age 30 – Stoker 1st Class (C/KX 83463) H.M. Submarine Simoom, Royal Navy.
The “Simoom” sailed from Port Said, Egypt on 2 November 1943 for the Aegean. In 2016 the wreck was found off the Turkish Aegean island of Bozcaada (Tenedos) and from the damage it is assumed that the “Simoom” must have hit a mine while running on the surface.
Born 1913 in Lowestoft, Mutford, Suffolk. Son of the late Thomas James Songhurst (died 1917) and of Elizabeth (Brown) Songhurst of 23 High Street, Dunbar.
Elizabeth first appears on the Dunbar Valuation Rolls in 1919 and she married Gunner John Rimmer of the Royal Artillery at Dunbar Barracks in 1925 in Edinburgh. Her daughter Elizabeth Doris Songhurst, born 1918 in Suffolk, died in Dunbar in 1999 aged 80.
Died on Active Service/Lost at Sea on 19 November 1943 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

His father was Thomas James Songhurst, Corporal (14129) 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.
Born 1892 in Lowestoft, Mutford, Suffolk. Son of Richard and Rosina Songhurst of Lowestoft and husband of Elizabeth Songhurst of 23 High Street, Dunbar who he married in 1913 in Lowestoft.
Died of Wounds on 11 May 1917 and buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France.
He is named on the Lowestoft Roll of Honour.

GEORGE E. THOMSON
George Edward Thompson – age 20 – Sergeant (637513) 102 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
George was the wireless operator and air gunner on his Whitley bomber which had taken off from RAF Dalton in Yorkshire for a raid on the harbour at Dunkirk. The aircraft was hit by ground-fire and crashed in the sea.
Born c.1921 in Dunbar. Son of David and Isabella Thompson of Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 16 December 1941 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.


ROBERT E. TOFTS

Robert Edward Tofts – age 22 – Sergeant (1122560) 619 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Robert was the flight engineer on his Lancaster bomber which had taken off from RAF Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire for a raid on Oberhausen. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter at Schijndel west of Veghel in the Netherlands.
Born 1921 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late Andrew Tofts (died 1934) and of Jessy (Learmonth) Tofts of Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 15 June 1943 and buried in Eindhoven (Woensel) General Cemetery, Netherlands.


LUIGI TOGNERI
Luigi Francisco Togneri, Member of the Order of the British Empire – age 30 – Surgeon, S.S. Empire Heritage (Cardiff) Merchant Navy.
Luigi graduated M.B. and Ch.B. from Edinburgh University in 1938. He was awarded an MBE in 1941 for his actions when his ship was badly damaged by a torpedo from a German U-boat. The vessel took on a dangerous list and the Master ordered all boats to be lowered, manned and pulled clear. He himself remained on board with the Chief Engineer and the ship's Surgeon, Doctor Togneri. These two Officers helped the Master to save the ship. (Source: London Gazette 8/7/1941 p.3964)
The tanker “Empire Harvester” was sailing from New York to Liverpool and Glasgow with a cargo of 16,000 tons of fuel oil and 1942 tons of deck cargo, including tanks and trucks when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-482 off the north of Ireland.
Born 1914 in Dunbar. Son of Joseph (Giuseppe) and Argene (Arrighi) Togneri of 131 High Street, Dunbar. Husband of Helen Bessie (Belford) Togneri of 49 Summerfield Road, Dunbar and of Edinburgh who he married in 1942 in Edinburgh.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 8 September 1944 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University.

PETER P. WATSON
Peter Paxton Watson – age 40 – Sergeant (1488032) 98 Battery, 19 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Peter died suddenly of a coronary thrombosis in the Military Hospital in Edinburgh Castle.
Born 1899 in Dunbar. Son of the late Henry and Annie (Paxton) Watson of 27 Parsonspool, Dunbar. Husband of Janet Hay (King) Watson of Marine Gaedens, Portobello and of Dunbar who he married in 1926 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 8 December 1939 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

ALLAN H. WHITE
Allen Hugh White – age 23 – Third Officer, S.S. Newton Ash (Newcastle-on-Tyne) Merchant Navy.
The “Newton Ash” was sailing in convoy from Canada to Hull with a cargo of grain, military stores and mail when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-402 south of Iceland.
Born 1919 in Dunbar as Allan. Son of James and Elizabeth (McLean) White of Colvin Street House, Dunbar.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 8 February 1943 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.


JAMES H. WILLIAMS
James Henry Williams – age 34 – Gunner (4444706) 7 Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery.
James was a Gunner based at the Castle Barracks in Dunbar when he married in 1930.
Born 1906 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Son of the late George Shaw Williams (died 1916) and of Charlotte (Bassett) Williams of New Shildon, County Durham. Husband of Jane Gullen (Hastie) Williams of Dunbar who he married in 1930 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 29 May 1941 and named on the Athens Memorial, Greece.

His father George Shaw Williams, Lance Corporal (39098) 32nd Company, Machine Gun Corps was killed on 28 September 1916 and is named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

ALBERT WILSON
Albert Wilson – age 29 – Lance Corporal (3056821) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
The 8th battalion landed at Normandy in mid to late June 1944 as part of the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division and fought through France, crossing into Belgium in early September. The division then moved into the bridgehead that had been established over the Albert Canal, at Gheel. From this foothold, on 14 September, the division launched several assaults to cross the Meuse-Escaut Canal. Albert was killed near Gheel and was re-interred in June 1945.
Born 1915 in Dunbar. Son of Janet Wilson of Dunbar. Husband of Mary Helen (Burgoyne) Wilson of Dunbar who he married in 1942 in Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 16 September 1944 and buried in Kasterlee War Cemetery, Belgium.


JOSEPH M. WILSON
Joseph Murray Wilson – age 21 – Stoker 1st Class (C/KX143932) H.M.S. Cochrane, Royal Navy.
HMS Cochrane was the name given to the Rosyth Naval Base from 1938.
Joseph and three of his comrades were killed in a road accident when their Royal Navy van collided with a bus at King's Road, Rosyth near the dockyard.
Born 1924 in Lauder, Berwickshire. Son of Robert William Wilson and of Nancy (Scott) Wilson, of 12 Church Street, Dunbar who had married in 1923 in Castleton, Roxburghshire.
Died on Service on 7 May 1946 and buried in Ettleton Old Churchyard, Roxburghshire. (CWG)


JOHN WOOD
John Wood – age 28 – Lance Corporal (3061423) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
The 2nd Battalion disembarked at Naples from Gibraltar on 29 July 1944 before moving to the Piedmonte area. By 21 August now forming part of 1st British Infantry Division within the US 5th Army, they had moved up to an area just to the east of Florence. John's remains were recovered from the battlefield and re-interred in February 1945.
Born c.1916 in Edinburgh. Son of George Robert Wood and of Thomasina Notman (Finlay) Wood of South Street, Belhaven, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1944 and buried in Florence War Cemetery, Italy.
