"Lieutenant C. Gordon MacDonald, 6th Scottish Rifles (T.F.) was killed in action in France on June 15. Lieutenant was a son of the late Mr E.E. MacDonald, headmaster of Hillhead High School, and before joining the force was assistant minister at Hamilton. Writing from the front, the Rev. Mr McGibbon, chaplain to the regiment, says-"Our Battalion was put in the front of the attack, and Lieutenant MacDonald was in the foremost Company. He was very seriously wounded soon after they made the charge, and must have died almost immediately. The regiment has lost a valued officer, and i have lost a valued friend and assistant.". Lieutenant MacDonald's brother is serving wiith the Canadians in France, and his widowed mother, for whom there is widespread sympathy, resides at Bearsden."

Named on the Kelso War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:
2nd LIEUT. JOHN G. G. CUTHBERT.
John George Gunn Cuthbert – age 26 – Lieutenant, 28th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
John was educated at Hownam school, Roxburghshire and at Woodside Higher Grade School in Glasgow before studying the Arts (M.A. 1913) and then Divinity at Edinburgh University. He was a Cadet Corporal in the Officer Training Corps until March 1915 when he was commissioned in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He went to France in October 1915 and was attached to the MGC. John was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 October but died just under three weeks later.
Born 1890 in Hownam. Son of the late James Cuthbert former schoolmaster at Hownam (died April 1916) and of Christina (Gunn) Cuthbert of Hownam, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 19 October 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

Reverend Edward John Howard MacIldowie – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 1/9th (Glasgow Highland) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Edward was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University from where he graduated with an Honours M.A. in 1912. He then began his divinity studies at Glasgow University and graduated B.D. in 1915. He was commissioned from the University's Officer Training Corps in November 1915 and joined his battalion on the Somme in July 1916 but was killed four months later.
Born 1891 in Barton Regis, Gloucestershire. Son of the late Rev. John MacIldowie (died 1898) and of Catherine Margaret (Williams) MacIldowie of 4 Logan Road, Bishopston, Bristol, of 12 Caird Drive, Partick, Glasgow and of Princes Road, Liverpool.
Ward of the late Rev. Dr. Borland of Yarrow, Selkirkshire.
Missing in Action on 1 November 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Yarrow Church memorial and on the Yarrow Roll of Honour at Yarrow Feus as Lt Rev E.J.H. MacIldowie, 2nd November, 1916, HLI, Yarrow Manse.

Named on the Stow Parish War Memorial in Midlothian as:
CAPT. J.T.C. IRELAND, CHAPLAIN
The Rev. John Thomas Craig Ireland – age 45 – Chaplain 4th Class, Army Chaplains' Department.
John was educated at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University where he was a student of the Arts and Divinity and from where he graduated M.A. in 1896. He became a minister in the United Free Church of Scotland and served as a Chaplain in the South African Wars.
John was the minister of the Stow United Free Church when he was appointed a Chaplain to the Forces in September 1915 and he landed with the 10th Black Watch at Boulogne that same month before moving with them to Salonica in northern Greece in November. He was returning to duty after some leave when the Troopship “Transylvania” sailing from Marseilles was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-63 in the Gulf of Genoa off Cape Vado, Italy.
Born 1872 in Wemyss, Fife. Son of the late William Ireland (died 1914) and of Jessie Craig (Ireland) Ireland of Norfield, Buckhaven, Fife. Husband of Agnes (Walker) Ireland of Ness Bank, Inverness, of Stow and of 18 Braid Crescent, Edinburgh who he married in 1899 in Edinburgh.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 4 May 1917 and named on the Savona Memorial, Italy.

Chaplains to HM Forces
JAMES KIRK, M.C. M.A. DUNBAR
The Rev. James Kirk, Military Cross – age 44 – Chaplain 4th Class, Army Chaplains' Department attached to the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was educated at Dunfermline High School and at the University of St. Andrews from where he graduated M.A. He was a Student of Divinity at Edinburgh University from 1898 to 1901 and became Minister of Forteviot parish in Perthshire. He moved to Dunbar Parish from Old Macher, Aberdeen in April 1913. He was commissioned in April 1915 and went to France. He was awarded the M.C. in June 1917 “for showing at all times conspicuous devotion to duty ad a total disregard to personal safety in carrying out his work,” James was wounded at Fampoux on the Scarpe in March 1918 and died in the 14 General Hospital at Wimereux.
Born 1873 at Kirkford, Beath. Fife. Son of the late James Kirk (died 1905) and of the late Janet (Reekie) Kirk (died 1917) of Kirkford, near Cowdenbeath, Fife. Husband of Elizabeth Mary (Mackay) Kirk of 8 Woodhall Terrace, Juniper Green, Midlothian who he married in 1904 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 1 April 1918 and buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the University of St. Andrews Memorial and Roll of Honour, on the Edinburgh University Old College Memorial and Roll of the Fallen, on the Church of Scotland Chaplains memorial in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh and on an individual memorial in Forteviot Parish Church. _________________ Ken |
