BOMBr. THOMAS JEFFREY, R.F.A.
Thomas Jeffrey – age 27 – Bombardier (97101) “D” Battery, 315th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Tom had been a carter at Ninewells Mill, Edrom when he enlisted. After three years of service, mainly in France, Tom was at home on leave when he contracted influenza and died of pneumonia at his home at Stuartslaw, Edrom.
Born 1891 at Ninewells Mill, Edrom. Son of Mary Jeffrey. Nephew of John Jeffrey of Ninewells Mill. Husband of Isabella (Hogarth) Jeffrey of Stuartslaw, Edrom who he married in 1918 in Edrom.
Died on Service on 12 November 1918 and buried in Edrom Parish Churchyard.


PRIVATE GEORGE KERR, K.O.S.B.
George Kerr – age 19 – Private (7345) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was serving his apprenticeship as a joiner with his father when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Edrom. Son of John and Elizabeth (Laing) Kerr of Kelloe Smithy, Edrom.
Killed in Action on 12 July 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PRIVATE JOSEPH LEARMONTH, SEAh. H.
Note: The family name varies between Learmonth and Learmouth from record to record.
Joseph Christopher Learmouth – age 30 – Private (1230) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Joseph was a farm servant in the Edrom. Chirnside and Reston areas for a number of years but he was employed by the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in 1912. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914 and fought at Mons, the Marne and the Aisne where he was wounded and evacuated home. After he had recovered he rejoined his battalion in January 1915 but he was killed at St Julien near Ypres.
Born 1885 in Coldingham, Berwickshire as Christopher Joseph Learmonth. Son of Jane Learmonth.
In 1891 he was living as Joseph with his grandmother Christina Learmouth and other family members, including his mother Jane, at Hutton, Berwickshire and in 1901 as Joseph C. Learmouth, born Coldingham, he was still with his grandmother Christina at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 25 April 1915 and buried in Seaforth Cemetery, Cheddar Villa, Belgium.
Also named on the Edrom Parish Church Roll of Honour.

CORPl. ARCHIBALD MARTIN, K.O.S.B.
Archibald Martin – age 36 – Lance Corporal (6766) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Archibald served his apprenticeship as a plumber in Duns, Berwickshire and served with the KOSB Volunteers, including during the South African War. He was employed at the Chirnside Mills in Edrom and, as a member of the National Reserve, he volunteered for service at the outbreak of war. William landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1879 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of Alexander and Annie (Thorburn) Martin of 6 Murray Street, Duns. Husband of Rachel (Simpson) Martin of Station Cottages, Chirnside and of the Blue House, Coldingham who he married in 1901 in Langton, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Duns Burgh and Parish War Memorial together with his brother William Martin, Private (4411) 1/4th KOSB who died as a prisoner of war on 10 October 1916.


SERGt. ROBERT McINTOSH, A.& S.H.
Robert James McIntosh – age 23 – Sergeant (S/4402) 12th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September 1915 but they soon moved and by November 1915 they were landing in Salonika in northern Greece. He died in the 28th General Hospital.
Born 1894 at Rink Farm in Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire. Son of Mary Murray McIntosh. Grandson of Alexander McIntosh of Nisbet Hill, Edrom and of Primrosehill, Bunkle & Preston, Berwickshire.
Died of Wounds on 10 November 1917 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.


LCe. CORPl. JAMES MIDDLEMISS, K.O.S.B.
James William Middlemiss – age 24 – Lance Corporal (13404) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a clerk in the Chirnside Mill in Edrom when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was fatally wounded during the battle of Loos and died in the 2/1st West Riding Casualty Clearing Station at Lillers.
Born 1891 in Edrom. Son of the late John Service Middlemiss (died 1910) and of Margaret Fortune (Gillies) Middlemiss of Allanton, Edrom,
Died of Wounds on 29 September 1915 and buried in Lillers Communal Cemetery, France.


PRIVATE ANDREW NAIRN, A.& S.H.
Andrew Nairn – age 23 – Private (S/20073) 12th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Andrew was a farm servant at Blackadder Bank, Edrom when he enlisted as Driver (T3/025801) in the Army Service Corps in November 1914. He was posted to Salonica in northern Greece in August 1916 and he was transferred to the 12th A&SH in April 1918.
Andrew was returning from leave onboard the Troopship “Invernia” when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-47 off Cape Matapan, Greece on 1 January 1917. He was rescued by an escorting vessel.
Born 1895 in Whitsome, Berwickshire. Son of the late Jane (Aikman) Nairn (died 1901) and of James Nairn of Blackadder Bank, Edrom, of Pathhead, Spott, East Lothian and of Huntlaw, Pencaitland, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 19 September 1918 and buried in Doiran Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Spott Parish War Memorial.

Three brothers without any documented connection to Edrom. However they were named as of Kimmerghame Mains, Edrom in a Berwickshire Roll of Honour of 1919.


SERGt. NIEL O' DONNELL, DURm. L.I.
Neil O'Donnell, Military Medal – age 33 – Lance Corporal (25940) 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
Neil was a ploughman at Nether Williamston, Mid Calder, West Lothian when he married in 1913 and he was at Newyearfield Farm, Livingston when, as a reservist, he was recalled to his old regiment at the outbreak of war. As Private (4575) 15th (The King's) Hussars he landed with his squadron at Rouen in August 1914. He was transferred to the DLI in 1915 and was awarded a M.M. for his actions in February 1917.
Born 1884 at Easter Kinleith Farm in Currie, Mid Lothian as Cornelious O'Donnell. Son of Peter and Catherine (Dickson) O'Donnell of Craighton Farm, Winchburgh, West Lothian. Husband of Margaret Clarkson (Whigham) O'Donnell of Auld Cathie, Winchburgh, West Lothian who he married in 1913 in Livingston as Neil Dickson O'Donnell.
Killed in Action on 22 May 1917 and buried in Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Winchburgh War Memorial.

PRIVATE THOMAS O' DONNELL, S.AFn. SCOT.

Served as:
Thomas Donald – age 39 – Private (X/804) 4th Regiment (South African Scottish) South African Infantry.
Thomas was a shepherd when as Thomas O'Donnell he enlisted as Private (5143) in the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) in November 1900 and in 1901 he was at the Cavalry Barracks in Leith. He served in South Africa from December 1901 until February 1903 when he bought his discharge from the army for £18, and he seems to have settled in South Africa. He enlisted as a Sapper and Fitter in the Miscellaneous Trades Company in June 1917 and was transferred to the 4th Regiment in July 1918.
Born 1880 in Bathgate, West Lothian. Son of Peter and Catherine (Dickson) O'Donnell of Craighton Farm, Winchburgh, Linlithgowshire, Husband of Annie Dingwall Donald of Beresford Buildings, Johannesburg.
Killed in Action on 8 October 1918 and buried in Beaurevoir British Cemetery, France.

PRIVATE WILLIAM O' DONNELL, S.AFn. SCOT.

Served as:
William Donald – age 24 – Private (9178) 4th Regiment (South African Scottish) South African Infantry.
William was an engineeer when he enlisted. He sailed from Cape Town and joined his regiment in Rouen in August 1916. He was killed near Fampoux.
Born 1893 in Riccarton, Linlithgow, West Lothian as William Mannas O'Donnell. Son of Peter and Catherine (Dickson) O'Donnell of Craighton Farm, Winchburgh, Linlithgowshire,

James enlisted as Private (25286) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but he was transferred to the Royal Scots in France.
Born 1887 in Edrom. Son of Henry and Janet (Purves) Patterson of Manderston South Lodge, Edrom.
Missing in Action on 7 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


PRIVATE ANDREW PAXTON, K.O.S.B.
Andrew Paxton – age 21 – Private (20730) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew enlisted with his brother William (20727) in July 1915 and he joined the 8th KOSB in France in December 1915.
Born 1894 in Swinton, Berwickshire, Son of Andrew and Grace (Cockburn) Paxton of Mountfair, Swinton and of Hilton, Chirnside, Berwickshire,
Missing in Action on 18 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Swinton Parish and on the Whitsome Parish War Memorials.

Adam Blackie Quinn – age 22 – Private (7235) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam enlisted in November 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.

William Quinn – age 27 – Private (1447) 2nd King Edward's Horse
William landed with his squadron in France in July 1915. He was killed by a sniper but his burial place was lost.
Born 1888 in Cranshaws, Longformacus. Berwickshire as Quin. Son of Edward and Margaret (Blackie) Quin of Whitelaws, Edrom, of Whitsome Laws, Whitsome, of Leetside, Chirnside, all in Berwickshire, and of Windywalls, Sprouston, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 27 November 1915 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Whitsome Parish War Memorial.


PRIVATE JAMES RUSSELL, K.O.S.B.
James Russell – age 22 – Private (16664) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a gamekeeper when he enlisted at Tenterden in Kent at the outbreak of war. He joined his battalion in France in April 1915 and was wounded later that year. In 1916 James was fatally wounded on the Somme and died a day later in a Field Ambulance at Dernancourt.
Born 1894 in Edrom. Son of Robert and Janet (Ballantyne) Russell of Allanton, Edrom.
Died of Wounds on 31 July 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery, France.


PRIVATE JOHN SPENCE, R.SCOTS.
John Spence – age 19 – Private (51690) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was employed as an hall boy at Lennel House, Coldstream when he enlisted in May 1917. He was posted as Private (2/13454) to the 55th Training Battalion and then as Private (53048) to the 4th Reserve Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers before he was sent to join the 11th Royal Scots in France on 31 March 1918. John was killed 13 days later.
Born 1899 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of William Stewart Spence and of Agnes (Cunningham) Spence of Craigswalls, Edrom.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM F. SOMERVAIL, D.S.O. M.C. SCOT. RFs.
William Fulton Somervail, Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross – age 26 – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and Brigade Major 3rd Infantry Brigade.
William was educated at Loretto School in Musselburgh until 1911. He obtained a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Cameronians in August 1914 and joined the 1st battalion in France in January 1915. He was awarded a M.C. “For conspicuous gallantry, marked ability and presence of mind at Neuve Chapelle from 10th to 14th March, 1915, when he ably seconded his Commanding Officer and performed excellent work on his own initiative. On the evening of the 12th March he collected the men of his battalion and conducted them over unknown ground to a position for attack with very good judgment. He brought his Battalion out of action after the engagement on 14th March.” He was promoted to Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion in April 1915, to Captain in June and fought at Loos and on the Somme. In July 1917 he took command of his Battalion again, was made Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel and awarded the D.S.O. In January 1918 he became Brigade Major, 3rd Infantry Brigade. William and his Brigadier, Sir William Algernon Ireland Kay, went out alone to reconnoitre the position at Joncourt near St. Quentin, and were found later lying dead, killed by the same shell.
Born 1892 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of James Alexander Somervail and of Isabella (Fulton) of Hoselaw, Linton, Roxburghshire. Husband of Joyce Isabel (Munro) Somervail of Auchindoune, Cawdor, Nairn who he married in August 1918 in Inverness.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1918 and buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial, on an individual plaque in Hoselaw Chapel, on the Linton Parish Church memorial, on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Loretto School memorial.


CAPTAIN THE HONble. CHARLES H. M. St. CLAIR, SEAfh. Hds.
Charles Henry Murray St. Clair – age 36 – Captain, 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Charles was educated at Eton College and at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was commissioned to the 2nd Seaforths in May 1898. He served in the South Africa War from 1899 until 1902 and was promoted to Captain in April 1902. He was posted to the 1st Seaforths at Agra in India in June 1912 and he returned with the battalion, landing at Marseilles in October 1914 but was killed two months later near La Bassee.
Born December 1878 in Kensington, London. Son of the Rt. Hon. Charles William, 15th Baron Sinclair, and of Margaret Jane Murray, Baroness Sinclair, of 55 Onslow Square, London, of Nisbet House, Edrom and of Herdmanston, Pencaitland, Haddingtonshire.
Killed in Action on 20 December 1914 and buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.
Also named on the Eton College memorial and on the Hobkirk Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire.

William Stansfield – age 23 – Lance Corporal (251424) 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1901 William, his mother and his two siblings were living with Betsy's parents William and Helen Scott at New Edrom House. William was a shepherd at Edrom Newton Farm when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised as Private (4786) in the 9th Royal Scots in April 1916 and was posted to France in November 1916. He joined the 5th Battalion in December.
Born 1895 in Gateshead, County Durham. Son of Andrew Shilling Stansfield and of Betsy or Elizabeth (Scott) Stansfield of Kimmerhame Mill, Edrom and of Horseupcleugh, Longformacus, Berwickshire. Andrew and Betsy had married in 1893 in Edrom.
Missing in Action on 11 August 1918 and named on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.


PRIVATE GEORGE SWANSTON, R.H.
George Swanston – age 22 – Private (58834) 227th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
George enlisted under the Derby scheme and was mobilised as Private (4761) in the Black Watch in the summer of 1916. He was posted to the MGC in France in June 1917 but he was killed during an air raid a month later.
Born 1895 at Chirnside Station, Berwickshire. Son of George and Mary (Anderson) Swanston of Chirnside Bridge, Edrom.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1917 and buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Edrom Parish Church Roll of Honour.


GNR. JAMES TAIT, R.G.A.
James Tait – age 30 – Gunner (365211) 139th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
James died in the 1st Canadian General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1888 at Caldersburgh, Spott, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of Andrew and Agnes (Allan) Tait of Kimmerghame Mains, Edrom and of Hethpool, Kirknewton, Wooler, Northumberland.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

Thomas McGregor Waugh – age 23 – Private (7765) 1/6th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Thomas was employed at Norham West Mains in Northumberland when he enlisted and he joined his battalion in France in September 1916.
Born 1893 in Cornhill, Berwick, Northumberland. Son of Elizabeth Jane Waugh. Husband of Margaret Helen (Tunnah) Waugh of Blackadder Home Farm, Edrom who he married in 1915 in Berwick. Margaret was born in Edrom in 1891.
Missing in Action on 26 October 1916 and named on the Arras Memorial, France
Also named on the Norham Parish War Memorial and on the St, Cuthbert's Church Roll of Honour in Norham.

James Weir – age 20 – Lance Corporal (S/3588) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James had been a postman in Gordon, Berwickshire before becoming a gamekeeper at Kimmerghame in Edrom. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed on Hill 70 during the battle of Loos.
Born 1895 in Hume, Berwickshire. Son of Samuel and Euphemia Landels (Murdie) Weir of Rumbletonlaw, Gordon and of Woodend, Duns, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Gordon Parish War Memorial.


LCe. CORPl. ARCHIBALD WIGHTMAN, GORDn. Hds.
Archibald Wightman – age 24 – Private (S/6824) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Archibald was a vanman when he enlisted in Duns in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was wounded two months later and treated in hospital in Rouen. He was wounded again a year later and was evacuated to the 1st Northern General Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in October 1916. Archibald returned to his battalion in April 1917 but he was killed two months later.
Born 1892 in Cranshaws, Berwickshire. Son of the late Elizabeth Johnston (Ewart) Wightman (died 1913 in Edrom) and of William Wightman of Kimmerghame Mains, Edrom.
Killed in Action on 28 June 1917 and buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Born 1897 in Westruther, Berwickshire. Son of George and Margaret (Paterson) Wilson of Bellshiel Farm and of Kimmerghame Mains, Edrom.
Killed in Action on 18 August 1918 and buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.


PRIVATE WILLIAM YOUNG, K.O.S.B.
William Young – age 24 – Private (S/14437) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
William was an insurance agent in the Allanton district of Edrom when he enlisted in November 1914 and he joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but he became ill and after a week he died of “spotted fever” (spinal meningitis) in the 10th Stationary Hospital in St. Omer.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret (Elder) Young (died 1909) and of ex-Inspector Roderick Young of Galashiels Burgh Police.
Died on Active Service on 14 April 1915 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Boston United Free Church memorial in Duns, and on the Galashiels War Memorial together with his brother Alexander James Young, Private (201396) 7th, Cameron Highlanders. Killed in April 1917.

I was at Act of Remembrance this morning, and it was pointed out to me a local lady's had 2 WWII names added onto back of memorial:

1939-1945

Driver Robert McL Kerr RASC
FC Off William A Whitehead RCAF



Centre front railing also removed.

ROBERT McLAREN KERR – age 39 – Driver (T/14247147) Royal Army Service Corps, attached to the 175th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
Robert was a coal merchant living at Kelloe Smithy in Edrom when he married in 1934. He had been employed at The Hirsel, Coldstream before he joined up. His unit was part of the 51st Highland Division and landed at Normandy on the afternoon of D-day 6 June 1944. Robert was killed near Colleville-sur-Orme and re-interred in May 1945.
Born 1905 in Edrom.
Son of the late John Kerr (died 1924) and of the late Elizabeth (Laing) Kerr (died 1934) formerly of Kelloe Smithy, Edrom.
Husband of Margaret Hamilton (Hay) Kerr of Crooks, Coldstream who he married in 1934 in Edrom.
Killed in action on 26 June 1944 and buried in La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres, France.
Robert is named on the Coldstream War Memorial.
His brother George was killed at Gallipoli in 1915 and is named on this memorial.


WILLIAM ANDERSON WHITEHEAD – age 29 – Flying Officer (J/28941) 207 (RAF) Squadron,
Royal Canadian Air Force.
William was a sheet metal worker in Winnipeg, Manitoba when he enlisted in May 1942. He was the Air Bomber on his Lancaster which had taken off from RAF Spilsby in Lincolnshire for a mine laying sortie to Danish waters. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter near Laastrup.
Born 1915 in Blackadder, Edrom.
Son of the late John Whitehead and of Christine (Anderson) Whitehead of Gallacher Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Killed in Action on 15 October 1944 and buried in Laastrup Churchyard, Denmark.
