This is a large and impressive memorial located on Schoolhill next to the Art Gallery.
I am guessing (on my limited knowledge of numerals) the Roman Numerals are reffering to each War. The first on the left and the second on the right.

Fantastic looking monument. I take it the names aren't on the memorial itself but in the books?

You are correct Barrie. There are 5,042 casualties recorded in the Roll of Honour in the format shown below.
