As part of the Bo’ness War Memorial Without Fear Project we identified Thomas Brown as one of the men listed. He had been discharged from the Army Service Corps on 16th Apr 1916. He died suddenly on 21st March 1918.
The only information we could find was from local newspapers:
Bo’ness Journal, 22nd March 1918:
Sudden Death: Yesterday afternoon a man named Thomas Brown (40), employed by the North British Railway Company’s contractor as a lorryman, was delivering goods at Newtown Store, and carrying a sack into the store he was seized with sudden illness. The employees in the store did what they could for him, but he died in a very short time. The unfortunate man whose home was at Corbiehall, only started work with the contractor yesterday morning.
Linlithgowshire Gazette, 29th March 1918:
Sudden Death of a Lorryman: Last Thursday afternoon Thomas Brown, lorryman, dropped dead while in the act of carrying a bag of meal into the Newtown branch of the Bo’ness Co-operative Society. He collapsed on the door-step, death being due to heart failure. Brown, himself a discharged soldier, relieved a younger man for the Army, and he had just entered upon his new occupation as a railway lorryman when the tragic event occurred. Deceased was aged 40 and leaves a widow and three children who reside at [61] Corbiehall.
Now using Pension Records and Ledgers we have confirmed this is indeed the right man, Thomas Brown, Army Service Corps,1st Labour Company, service no: SS/4404. Importantly his records also show that his death was caused by heart failure aggravated by active service.
Thomas is buried in common ground, grave G.141, in Bo’ness Cemetery with no headstone or marker. Wondering if you agree that he might be a non-comm and would be happy if this Group would put the details forward to CWGC for inclusion on the CWGC Roll of Honour and perhaps at some point in the future, a headstone. |

The DC, unusually, does not give a cause of death – simply ‘heart failure’ and everyone dies of heart failure. It is what caused the failure we need to know.
His pension record card is not really enough on its own as it add nothing about the cause so we will look to see if we can find anything else. You only have post-death evidence here and we need something do show that he was discharged with a heart condition. It doesn’t help that the DC refers to post-discharge ‘exertion’ and that is likely to be taken as the cause of the heart failure and obviously has no direct service connection.
All a bit weak at the moment. I’ll come back to you. We need more evidence.
Please let Alan know so as not to raise expectations.
