Named on the WW2 panel of the Stow Parish War Memorial in Midlothian as:

CAPT. DENIS H. ORROCK, R.A.
Denis Heriot Orrock – age 25 – Captain (71581) 78 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Denis was educated at Edinburgh Academy where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps and from where he gained a commission in the Territorial 78th (Lowland) Field Regiment in May 1937. He studied law at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1938, and had completed his apprenticeship in Edinburgh when war broke out. He landed with the 52nd Division at Cherbourg in June 1940 but the division was evacuated again after only a week. The 78th left the Division in August 1942 bound for Egypt as part of the reinforcements for Eighth Army and arrived in time to take part in the Second Battle of El Alamein in October where Denis was fatally wounded.
Born 1917 in Edinburgh. Son of William Archibald Orrock and Isabella Currie (Ritchie) Orrock of Allanshaugh, Fountainhall, Stow.
Died of Wounds on 4 November 1942 and buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Edinburgh Academy memorial.

Named on the Hutton Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire as:

GUNNER PETER GEDDES HENDRY, R.G.A.
Peter Geddes Hendry – age 19 – Gunner (152252) 326th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Peter was educated at Berwick Grammar School before becoming a student of medicine at Edinburgh University in 1916. He enlisted in April 1917 and went to France in December but whilst in training he was accidentally killed.
Born 1898 at Mordington Manse, Berwickshire. Son of the Rev. Peter Geddes Hendry, M.A. and of Margaret (Jones) Hendry of Paxton Manse.
Died on Active Service on 6 February 1918 and buried in Villers Station Cemetery, Villers-au-Bois, France.
Also named on the Berwick Grammar School memoria and on the University's Roll of the Fallen.

A. WALLACE, M.B. C.M.

Named on the Coldstream Burgh and Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire as:

WALLACE, ANDw. Capt. K.O.S.B.
Andrew Wallace, M.B. C.M. – age 40 – Captain, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was educated at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh before he studied medicine at Edinburgh University from where he graduated in 1896. He took a post in Leicester and then served as a ship's doctor before setting up in practice in Coldstream in about 1900. In 1901 he was lodging at Tweed Terrace. He then began a long association with the KOSB Volunteers, becoming Captain in 1906, and with the Territorials. He commanded the Coldstream detachment when the battalion was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with them at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1875 in Prestonpans, East Lothian. Son of James Wallace, Headmaster of Prestonpans School, and of Barbara (Smith) Wallace of 54 Joppa Road, Portobello, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Rodger memorial in Coldstream Parish Church, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen, and on the George Heriot's School and Prestonpans War Memorials together with his brothers Harold Sydney Wallace, age 22, Private (893) 8th Royal Scots, died on 8 April 1915, and William Ernest Wallace, age 38, Lieutenant, 8th Royal Scots, died 17 April 1917.

L.F. TOGNERI, M.B.E., M.B., Ch.B.

Named on the Dunbar Burgh and Parish War Memorial in East Lothian as:

LUIGI TOGNERI
Luigi Francisco Togneri, Member of the Order of the British Empire – age 30 – Surgeon, S.S. Empire Heritage (Cardiff) Merchant Navy.
Luigi graduated M.B. and Ch.B. from Edinburgh University in 1938. He was awarded an MBE in 1941 for his actions when his ship was badly damaged by a torpedo from a German U-boat. The vessel took on a dangerous list and the Master ordered all boats to be lowered, manned and pulled clear. He himself remained on board with the Chief Engineer and the ship's Surgeon, Doctor Togneri. These two Officers helped the Master to save the ship. (Source: London Gazette 8/7/1941 p.3964)
The tanker “Empire Harvester” was sailing from New York to Liverpool and Glasgow with a cargo of 16,000 tons of fuel oil and 1942 tons of deck cargo, including tanks and trucks when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-482 off the north of Ireland.
Born 1914 in Dunbar. Son of Joseph (Giuseppe) and Argene (Arrighi) Togneri of 131 High Street, Dunbar. Husband of Helen Bessie (Belford) Togneri of 49 Summerfield Road, Dunbar and of Edinburgh who he married in 1942 in Edinburgh.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 8 September 1944 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

Named on the East Linton and Prestonkirk Parish War Memorial in East Lothian as:

GEORGE LAING
George Laing – age 24 – Second Lieutenant, 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George was a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University when he enlisted as Private (1702) in the 3/8th Royal Scots in February 1915. He was commissioned in the Cameronians in September 1915 and he joined his battalion in France in August 1916.
Born 1893 in Prestonkirk. Son of the late Alexander Laing (died 1901) and of Marion (Forrest) Laing of Lauder House, Prestonkirk.
Died of Wounds on 10 April 1917 and buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Named on the East Linton and Prestonkirk Parish War Memorial in East Lothian as:

ALEX. PENNYCOOK
Alexander Pennycook – age 21 – Lance Corporal (43082) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University when he enlisted as Private (1852) in the 3/8th Royal Scots in November 1915. He went to France in August 1916 and he was was posted to the 12th Battalion in September. Alexander became a prisoner of war at Kemmel Hill in April 1918 and died of pneumonia at the camp at Saaralbe.
Born 1896 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Tod) Pennycook of Phantassie Orchard, Prestonkirk.
Died on Service on 16 October 1918 and buried in Sarralbe Military Cemetery, France.

DUNCAN B. STEWART
Duncan Blair Stewart – age 32 – Second Lieutenant (363893) General List seconded to the 2nd Battalion, 15th Punjab Regiment.
Duncan graduated B.Sc. from Edinburgh University in 1933 and became a Forest Officer in the Sarawak Government Service at Kuching. He was granted a Governor's Commission in the Colonial Military Forces in January 1942 and was officially transferred to the General List in 1946.
Born 1911 in Prestonkirk. Son of the late Elizabeth (Brotherston) Stewart (died 1939) and of John William Stewart of Craigour, East Linton.
Missing in Action on 20 March 1942 and named on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.
Also named on the Prestonkirk Old Parish Church memorial in East Linton.

Named on the North Berwick War Memorial in East Lothian as:

J. CARNAGHAN. 2nd LT
James Carnaghan – age 27 – Second Lieutenant, 12th (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1911 James was a law apprentice living with his grandparents James and Catherine Carnaghan in North Berwick. He became a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1912 and enlisted in the 15th Royal Scots in October 1914. He was commissioned in the Cameronians in August 1915 and joined the 2nd Battalion in France in July 1916.
Born 1889 in Greenock, Renfrewshire. Son of William Niven Carnaghan and Elizabeth (Campbell) Carmaghan. Grandson of James and Catherine Milligan (Niven) Carnaghan of Linda Vista, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 23 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also on the North Berwick High School memorial.

John Mitchell Dow – age 26 – Lance Corporal (S/11185) 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
John was educated at Dunfermline High School before becoming a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University in 1908. He graduated M.A. in 1911 and became a teacher at North Berwick School. He enlisted in August 1915 and joined his battalion in France in 1916.
Born 1890 Partick, Glasgow as John Mitchell Findlay. Son of the late David Gordon Findlay (died 1892) and of Agnes Smith (Quinney) Findlay, and step-son of William Dow of Battery Road, North Queensferry, Fife who married in 1893 in Inverkeithing, Fife.
Killed in Action on 29 April 1916and buried in St. Mary's A.D.S. Cemetery, Haisnes, France.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick, on the North Queensferry War Memorial, on the Inverkeithing War Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the North Berwick War Memorial as:

W. S. S. LYON, LT
Walter Scott Stuart Lyon – age 28 – Lieutenant, 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Walter was educated at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire before studying the Classics at Oxford and becoming a Student of Law at Edinburgh from where he gradated in 1912. He had joined the Territorial 9th (Highlanders) Battalion in 1910 and was promoted in February 1913. He was a Staff Captain, Lothian Brigade during 1914-15 before he joined the 1/9th Battalion in France in March 1915. He was the author of "Easter at Ypres 1915, and other Poems." before he was killed at Ypres.
Born 1886 in North Berwick. Son of the late Walter Fitzgerald Knox Lyon (died 1894) and Isabella Romanes (Towers-Clark) Lyon, of Tantallon Lodge, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 8 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Faculty of Advocates memorial in Edinburgh.

Two of his brothers were killed in 1914 and are also named on the North Berwick War Memorial.
Alexander Patrick Francis Lyon, Lieutenant, 1st Gordon Highlanders.

Thomas Sydney Hermann Schafer – age 24 – Lieutenant, 13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Thomas was educated at Cargilfield School and at Edinburgh Academy before becoming a Student of Science at Edinburgh University. He moved to Caius College, Cambridge in 1912 and then in 1913 he became a medical Student at University College Hospital, London. He enlisted as Private (74) with the Australian Voluntary Hospital and went to France in August 1914. Thomas was commissioned in December 1914 and joined his battalion in France in August 1915 but he was killed the following month during the battle of Loos.
Born 1891 in Croxley Green, Watford, Hertfordshire. Son of the late Maud (Dixey)Schafer (died 1896) and of Sir Edward Sharpey Schafer, F.R.S., of Edinburgh University and of Marly Knowe, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Cargilfield School and Edinburgh Academy memorials and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

William James Gracie – age 21 – Second Lieutenant, 9th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment.
William was educated at the North Berwick High School before becoming a student of Science at Edinburgh University in 1913. He was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from where he was commissioned in July 1915. He went to France in July 1916 and was killed at Arras. William was buried in St. Laurent Blangy Communal Cemetery and was re-interred in 1923.
Born 1895 in Dirleton. Son of the Rev. James Gracie, B.D., and of Jane (Shearer) Gracie of the United Free Manse, Dirleton.
Killed in Action on 26 April 1917 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

PATRICK A. BLAIR
Patrick Alexander Blair, Military Cross – age 37 – Captain: 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Patrick was educated at Sedbergh School in Yorkshire (now Cumbria) and was a student of law at Edinburgh University during 1900 -1. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1904 in Edinburgh and owned Glebe Cottage in Gullane. He was joint editor of The Accountants' Magazine for several years prior to the war. He was a Captain with the 9th Royal Scots Territorials from 1912 and landed with the battalion at Le Havre in February 1915. He was awarded the M.C. in 1917.
Born 1879 at St. George's, Edinburgh. Son of Alexander Blair (Sheriff of the Lothians) and his wife Fairley (Kerr) Blair.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France.
Also named on the Sedbergh School Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen, and on the Urr Parish and Springholm Village War Memorials in Kirkcudbrightshire as Captain P. A. Blair, M.C. R.Scots,

William was educated at Edinburgh Academy before becoming a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1907. He qualified as a Writer to the Signet in 1912 and was commissioned in August 1914. William was promoted to Captain in March 1915 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1889 in Edinburgh as William Hugh Robertson. Son of the late James Alexander Robertson-Durham of Boghead, Bathgate and Fauldshiels (died 1909) and of Minnie Moir (Scott) Robertson-Durham of Glencairn Crescent, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Edinburgh Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.
