The Press and Journal (Aberdeen)19 Apr 2017
Vandals have targeted two memorials within a few feet of each other in Aberdeen, including one which was only installed last month.
Both the Major General Charles George Gordon statue and the Lieutenant Archibald Smith plaque on Schoolhill have been daubed with black paint.
Lieutenant Smith’s memorial, which was only officially unveiled on March 10, was also defaced.
Meanwhile, the culprits blacked out four lines of engraved text on Major General Gordon’s statue.
Last night the acts were condemned as vandalism by the city’s lord provost, who said he was “disgusted”.
Councillor George Adam said: “Aberdeen has a proud military history and to see these memorials desecrated by mindless vandalism will shock many people, it has disgusted me.
“Only a few weeks have passed since we marked the centenary of Archibald Smith’s death in the First World War.
“He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and this stone was laid in his memory. I cannot understand why anyone would do this, it makes me very angry and I hope the perpetrator can be found.”
Police have now launched an investigation. _________________ Researching WWI info from Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Kincardineshire & Morayshire. |
