In yesterday's (29 June 2019) newspaper there is a short article about a new memorial to be erected at Strathaven, Lanarkshire, to a German Shepherd dog, "Rifleman Khan", who rescued his master from icy waters during a Second World War raid. The dog was awarded the Dickin Medal.
Strathaven was the hometown of his handler, LC Jimmy Muldoon, Cameronians. Muldoon and Khan were thrown into the water in a raid on the Dutch island of Walcheren in November 1944. The dog towed his master to safety.
Sculptor John McKenna will create of bronze statue, honouring the pair, after fundraisers collected £52,000 from all over the world. |
