The Scottish Monument in Flanders, already mentioned on this forum in the Links and Outside Scotland sections, is due to be unveiled later this year.
Last year two new memorials were unveiled in Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire and another one in France.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other unveilings due to take place at home or abroad this year apart from the one in Belgium?

I don't know if anyone else saw recent articles about a proposed new memorial in Glenrothes, Fife.

The only names they have so far are for Iraq War casualties. One of the local men Marc Ferns already has a small cairn erected in his honour next to the Exit Community Centre in Pitteuchar. The local council is looking for anyone who knows of any other Glenrothes men who have died in conflicts between 1948, the year Glenrothes was established and today.

Private William Reynolds, Victoria Cross, of Edinburgh is hoped to be remembered later this year at his birthplace at 5 Jamaica Street, Edinburgh according to yesterday's BBC Scotland website.

We missed out on the news of the new Cowie memorial being unveiled last weekend to New Zealand pilot Carlisle Everiss.

I'm ahead of the game with this next one. It is a memorial to the First Battle of Falkirk in Callander Park, Falkirk. It looks like it is nearly finished. I don't know if it is a completely new memorial or if it has been relocated and refurbished.

The battle was fought on 22nd July 1298 so I wonder if the unveiling will be this 22nd July coming? I couldn't get better pictures of the inscription because I had to take the photograph through the fence.

The memorial is near the car park. It is at NS 894 794

Despite what the sign below says it is nowhere near a railway line!

I missed this first time round but a Scotsman article from 17th May was reprinted into this week's Edinburgh Herald and Post.

There are plans in the very early stages to raise a memorial to the Scots Guards at Edinburgh Castle.

The One O'clock Gun Association are involved with this one as well. It seems they have an involvement in any new war memorials in Edinburgh.

I found a reference to the Battle of Falkirk memorial unveiling on a website called Crann Tara.

"Commemoration and cairn un-veiling will take place on the 21st July; The event will start by meeting at the tomb of John de Grahame in Falkirk then marching to the Battle Cairn where a plaque will be un-velied by Ronnie Browne and speeches from various people to be confirmed."

As mentioned on another thread the former TA Drill hall on Dalmeny Street in Leith has recently been refurbished as a community arts centre for Leith. A local park nearby which was connected to the Drill hall is also being regenerated.

The new management are well aware of the history of the hall and its significance to Leith. It was the home of the 7th Royal Scots in 1915 when so many Leithers were killed in the Gretna rail crash.

I have seen several references to some sort of memorial being proposed for the park, or the hall for the men of the 1/7th Bn Royal Scots who died in the accident.

A recent copy of the free newspaper the Leith Gazette mentions an existing memorial and a proposed one but the article isn't that clear on details. I will quote some of it here.

"...The fate of the soldiers who perished will also be remembered by the British Army, which relinquished a memorial plaque when the TA vacated the building six years ago."

Does that mean the memorial plaque is still in the hall? However a later quote seems to contradict this.

From Rob Hoon of Out-of-the-Blue. "We're going to put a listing up in memory [of those who lost their lives]. That way this building will always be a memorial to what happened".

To me that doesn't sound like they have the old TA plaque. I've found a contact name for the Buildings Manager - Greg Molleson and an e-mail adress so i'll drop him a note.

Armed Forces Memorial

I know this memorial is in England and no section seems to be devoted to Scottish Regiments, but all Scots who died on military operations since WW2 are covered so I thought it worth a mention here.

I will photograph the memorial this weekend, I will let the mods decide where it should go on the forum if at all. The panels are huge with 16,000 names.
