Lance Corporal, S/11551, James Murray Hannah

The third son of Mr Peter Hannah, Parton. Killed in action age 33 years. Prior to enlisting he was a shepherd with Mr Cranston, Mitchellslacks, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.

(Mitchellslacks Moor was used in the film, The 39 Steps).

James Murray Hannah – age 33 – Lance Corporal (S/11551) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James was a shepherd at Mitchellslacks, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in February 1916. He was posted to 8/10th Battalion in France in July 1916 and transferred to 1st Battalion. He was a member of the Lewis Gun Section when he was shot by a sniper near Monchy-le-Preux.
Born 1884 at Borland, Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Peter and Jane (McLellan) Hannah of Parton. Husband of Jeannie McKeand (Miller) Hannah of Gatelawbridge, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1905 in Mochrum Parish, Wigtownshire.
Missing in Action on 16 June 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Patron Parish War Memorial, on the Parton Parish Church memorial and on the village Roll of Honour; on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial and on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.
