Waterside - Cumnock & Doon District
Waterside Institute, Church Hall , Authority - East Ayrshire, OS Ref No. NS 437 086, UKNIWM Ref No. 5973
The Waterside war memorial is a grey granite celtic cross with central boss and wheel-head standing on a tapering pedestal and base. There are celtic patterns carved in relief on the cross-head and shaft. The names of the dead are listed in lead lettering on the pedestal. The dedication reads:
ERECTED
BY THE PEOPLE
OF WATERSIDE
TO PERPETUATE
THE MEMORY
OF THE MEN
WHO FELL
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1919
This memorial was in the news a few years back when a new resident threatened to demolish the memorial which he claimed stood on his land. As far as I know the memorial is still there.

I have been to Waterside a few times and never seen the memorial - I must try harder to see if it is there.
The memorial was grade C(S) listed on 19 Mar 1993. |

I visited the memorial yesterday and spoke to the house owner of the property. He is certainly against the memorial being on his land but resigned to the fact that he cannot do anything about it. UKNIWM holds 3 newspaper cuttings about his previous attempt to have it removed in 1993. I pointed out that, should there be local agreement to move to an alternative location, the WMT would possibly contribute towards removal costs and I left him with details. Apparently there is local opposition to it being moved to any alternate location.
The memorial is not so easy to find, turn into the only obvious road into Waterside, past the school, to the track at the end, turn right and follow the track to the end.
The area around the memorial is now laid to gravel although whether by the householder or others is not clear. The wreaths show that it is still used as a place of commemoration and the granite appears to have been cleaned at some time in the last few years. The only minor problem is the weeds (bindweed) growing around the base.

These names are also on the Dalmellington Parish Memorial. Interestingly that memorial was the subject of legal action over its position when it was first built.
