Londoner Arthur E Smith served in the London Scottish and Machine Gun Corps during the First World War. He was discharged to the Class Z Reserve in 1919 but has two entries in the Scottish National War Memorial WW1 Roll of Honour - one for his servive in the London Scottish and then again in the Machine Gun Corps RoH.
Here is his MGC SNWM entry. Note his date of death and his cause of death:
Surname: SMITH
Forename: Arthur E
Rank: Pte
Service number: 159673
Place of birth: London
Date of death: 19 February 1971
Theatre of death: Unknown
Cause of death: drgp
SNWM roll: MACHINE GUN CORPS
Unit name: MACHINE GUN CORPS INFANTRY
Other detail: Formerly 514456 London Scottish.
He is not listed in the CWGC database with a date of death after his discharge. If his date of death was 1971 then does that make him the last man to die of First World War wounds?
