Dr Ken Bogle and the Midlothian Council's Library Service have identified this war memorial. We don’t have a photograph or location but it does still exist. I have added it to our database and I hope extra information can be added here at a later date.

I visited the South Kirk today as part of the Midlothian Remembers project and was able to get these images for the site.

from: http://www.theygavetheirtoday.com/royal-air-force-chaplains.html
Ian Wallace Moreton TAYLOR.
Squadron Leader, Royal Air Force. RAFVR no. 104278.
He died on 20 October 1946. He was 33.
He was the son of John Moreton Taylor and Mary Ann Taylor and the husband of Cecilia Mackie Robertson Taylor of Edinburgh.
He is buried in plot O, row A, grave 2 in Bhowanipore Cemetery, Kolkata (Calcutta)
Additional Information
Avro 685 York MW208 of 51 Squadron took off at 07.27 hours from RAF Dum Dum, Calcutta. The port inner engine was not giving full power during take-off because the spark plugs were heavily coated with carbon and other substances. Consequently, the aircraft did not get airborne, the pilot cut the engines and the aircraft crashed during an attempt to stop safely. Of the 18 persons on board, three were killed.
Most of the men named on this site are "The Rev." and or have the rank of Chaplain.
Ian is shown as Squadron Leader.
I wonder if there was a difference between a "Padre" and a "Chaplain" ? _________________ Ken |

Taylor is not listed on the Penicuick civic war memorial. I wonder if he had been a minister at the church? He is not listed alphabetically which suggests he deserved special mention.
There are two others listed on the WW2 plaques who are not on the local civic war memorial. Coincidentally they are the first and last names - Flying Officer Affleck and Signaller Wardie.

There is a mention in one source that the above memorial plaque is to be moved to Penicuik South Church.
Did that ever happen? _________________ Ken |
