Not a query as such ........

Surname BAKER
Firstname J K

Other 12th Bn.
SNWM roll THE CAMERONIANS (SCOTTISH RIFLES)
Rank T/Capt
Theatre of death France.
Only J. K. Baker listed on both CWGC & SNWM
Listed on:
St. Andrew’s Church, Baillieston.
Stirling Civic Memorial
Coatbridge Technical School
Coatbridge High School
In the 1891 Census, he was living with his parents at 22 Albert Place, Stirling (with a squad of siblings)
In the 1901 Census, he was still at 22 Albert Place and his occupation was listed as 'Art P L High School of Art' which is probably Ancestry's version of 'Art Pupil' etc.
This man has intrigued me for a while - he seems to pop up in loads of places. I've written the memorials I can remember, but I think there's more.
I know it's very common for men to be listed on more than one memorial - Stirling because he was born there, Coatbridge - did he go to school there?, Baillieston .....? then he ended up down south.
I downloaded his MIC which lists him as John Kildour Baker, his rank as (5158) Sergeant in R.S.F. (I think), then T/Captain (the T looks as though it's been scored out) and on the reverse side it gives the following info:
Address: G. G. Baker Esq. (son, 2? years of age)
C/o G. Gillespie (Guardian)
75? St. Vincent Street, Glasgow
So, I'm wondering if anyone else can remember him anywhere else?

Hi Anne,
A look at the census page on ScotlandsPeople shows him to be Art P. T. High School of Art. I take that to be Art Pupil Teacher at the High School of Art. His father is listed as Art Master High School Stirling.

Curiouser and curiouser ......?
Next thought - if he was an Art Teacher, I wonder where he would have gained his qualifications?
I know the new Stirling High School houses the stained glass memorial from the old Stirling High School, but after just having had a look at it - there's no names.

Ken Morrison kindly sent me this wee snippet:
London Gazette 28979 page 9502 published 17 November 1914
12th Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John Kilgour Baker to be Temporary Lieutenant. Dated 3 November 1914.

Back in 2008, the man detailed below caused a bit of a mystery as he appeared on umpteen memorials but we didn't know the connection.
"The following man is also commemorated on a Church Memorial which is now housed in St. Andrew's Parish Church in Baillieston.

It is unknown what the connection is with Baillieston.

Just by chance, I came across a Death Notice in the Glasgow Herald for what appears to be for his first wife Jane Gillespie and as she died at 'Calder View', Baillieston, I think this is the link we needed. His parents are buried in Holy Rude Kirkyard in Stirling, but there is no mention of John on the family stone there.
DC Reads: Jane Baker nee Gillespie, age 28, wife of John Kilgour Baker, Art Master, died 7th September 1912 at Calder View, Muirhead Road, Baillieston
The newspaper notice (below) shows that John was Art Master at Coatbridge, so this explains why he appears on some Coatbridge Memorials.
