This man is commemorated by a private memorial in Kilmadock graveyard, near Doune, Scotland. It was unveiled on 25 Aug 1943.

I don't know if this memorial will look like a grave but it should be on the forum, hence the post in the requests section. If anyone is able to get to Kilmadock Graveyard and look for it, it would be good to get because I don't think he's commemorated anywhere else locally.

KNIGHT, HAROLD
Initials: H
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Captain
Regiment/Service: Scots Guards
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 17/06/1941
Service No: 69093
Additional information: Adopted son of Lady (Ian) Hamilton, of Paddington, London.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 21. A. 4.
Cemetery: HALFAYA SOLLUM WAR CEMETERY

He died of wounds after an attack by 2nd Bn Scots Guards on Axis troops at Musaid Fort and Salum Barracks, Libya, on 16th June 1941.

He was the adopted son of General Sir Ian and Lady Hamilton. Lady Hamilton died before her adopted son so the family details on the CWGC are confusing. I can only assume that was the way Sir Ian wanted it listed. He lived until 1947.

As far as I can see Captain Knight wasn't listed on any other local memorials. The Hamiltons adopted Harry Knight after WW1 and had a home in (or near) Doune.

To help find it, there's a photo at:

The article, from the Gallipoli Association, relates the refurbishment of the family memorial in the summer of 2013.

I have no idea how to get to this burial ground much as I would like to visit.

I know where it is, but I don't fancy traipsing through fields to get to it and from aerial/bird's eye views, there doesn't seem to be any other way.

Anyone know an alternative route?

My mystery solved .....

Kilmadock Burial Ground is in the middle of fields near Buchany and has no CWGC graves.

Kilmadock CEMETERY is on the B826 (Thornhill Road) as has 7 CWGC graves - 2 WW1, 5 WW2.

Two completely different locations miles apart - no wonder I was confused!

I think Kilmadock might have been in Perthshire albeit now Stirlingshire?

Stirlingshire's boundaries seem to have been quite moveable over the years!

Thanks

It's not that they are moveable Adam it's just the administrative structures that change. I lived in Dunblane for some years under many "Cooncil" titles and everyone ignored them and called it Perthshire.
It had the additional benefit of the entitlement to the wearing of a White rather than Black tie at formal doos. (don't ask)

The Wikipedia entry for Doune gives you some idea of the "mess"

Doune (/duːn/; Gaelic: An Dłn, 'the fort') is a burgh in the district of Stirling, Scotland. Doune's postal address places the town in Perthshire which is also its Registration County, although administratively Doune is under the control of Stirling Council. Doune is assigned Falkirk postcodes starting 'FK'. The village lies within the parish of Kilmadock and mainly within the area surrounded by the River Teith and Ardoch Burn.

Is that all clear?
