He's not listed on either the Bannockburn or the Stirling Civic Memorials.
Not in the Stirling Observer Annual either (1911 - 1939)

I'm posting an image of his MIC as I don't know what all the letters stand for, maybe this will shed some light?
Note the address of his NOK is in the US.

There's a D Croy on the Plean memorial... that's one of the names I've found no info at all on. If resident in Bannockburn, could he have been employed in Plean Colliery? |

I'm nit-picking here, but it's Tullibody, not Tillibody.
(But it's Tillcoultry, not Tullicoultry)

OOps, sorry about the mis-spell
Tanya - There is only one D. CROY on CWGC/SNWM/SDGW so I'd guess that the Plean man is your man!
Anne - most of the intials are a mystery to me too but the first three are, I'm sure, for India - and the last four for North West Frontier Force. This would seem to confirm the CWGC record and that David was in India in 1919 and died there. _________________ Ken |

Anne - on the reverse page of the Medal Card is (I think) the Indian General Service Medal & Clasp.
One of the clasps was issued for the Afghanistan NWF 1919 campaign (The Third Afghan War 6/5/1919 to 8/8/1919) One of the Battalions involved was the 1/4th The Queen's (West Surrey Regiment) _________________ Ken |

From the other thread
Adam Brown wrote: | This is interesting. Here's what the Long-Long Trail says about 1/9th Middlesex's war:
1/9th Battalion
August 1914 : in Willesden Green. Part of Middlesex Brigade in Home Counties Division. Moved on mobilisation to Sheerness and then to Sittingbourne.
30 October 1914 : sailed from Southampton for India, arriving Bombay on 2 December 1914. The Bn eventually moved to Mesopotamia, arriving Basra on 24 November 1917, and joined the 53rd Brigade of the 18th Indian Division. It remained in that theatre until the end of the war.
So unless he was in an advance party Croy couldn't have been with the battalion in Mespot before November 1917.
What scans does the CWGC have online from IWGC?

"G - Home Counties Regiments New Army men and later"
That doesn't really help but worth mentioning since there doesn't seem to be much to go on about Croy's service.
I would always err with CWGC over SNWM so I'd go with him dying in India in 1919. I would suggest that since the battalion went from India to Mesopotamia to serve in an Indian division then it may have returned to India before being disbanded - around the summer of 1919 as with other TF units. Unfortunately the LLT doesn't clarify what happened to the battalion after the Armistice and I can't find any other sources.

No mention of RASC on the Medal Index Card and no mention of The Queen's Regt on SNWM |
Just to confuse matters a Queen's Own man with the number 8224 did die in Mesopotamia. It's the wrong name, wrong date of death, wrong regiment - (The Queen's and the Queen's Own are not the same regiment) and no mention of RASC but I'm wondering why SNWM has the wrong date of death and wrong secondary regiment? There must have been confusion with another soldier

Looks like a transcription error - someone has transposed the 7 and the 9: 23.9.17 or 23.7.19 |

Croy is listed under the RASC on the SNWM so where did SNWM get these details from?
Era: WW1
Surname: CROY
Forename: David
Rank: Pte
Service number: 08224
Decoration
Place of birth
Date of death: 23 September 1917
Theatre of death: Mesopotamia
Cause of death: Killed in action
SNWM roll: ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS Unit name Unknown Unit attached to ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS
Other detail latterly G/57021. 1/9th (T.F.) Bn. The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment).
There's no obvious CWGC name who died on that date in Mespotamia. There is this man who was in 15th Divisional Signal Coy. RE. That should mean he was a member of the 15th (Scottish) Division but it did not serve in Mespotamia so another mystery there. This man is not on the SNWM database.
KEATING, J
Rank:Gunner
Service No:15882
Date of Death:23/09/1917
Regiment/Service:Royal Garrison Artillery 64th Coy. attd. 15th Div. Signal Coy. Royal Engineers
Grave Reference:XI. K. 2.
Cemetery:BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY

That seems the logical explanation for the date, but why does the SNWM entry mention Mespotamia and 08224 RASC?
Thanks

I don't know how much checking there has been of transcriptions but if the transcriber could transpose two digits, I suppose he/she could also look at the name above/below in the list and copy down some of these details instead of the correct ones.

The Returns for Warrant Officers, NCO's and men from Scotlands People have him serving with the Middlesex Regiment and being killed in action on 23 July 1919. I cannot make out the place of death but it looks like M.E.F.
