UKNIWM: 54115

Duns Parish Church is a fine building in Berwickshire's county town; much finer internally than its exterior appearance belies.

This grand plaque was unveiled on Sunday 27th March 1921:

The Scotsman, 29th March 1921

DUNS - At the close of the forenoon service in Duns Parish Church, Major RD Sinclair Weymss, Wedderburn, unveiled a handsome cast bronze mural tablet, bearing a suitable inscription and the names of 42 men belonging to the congregation who fell in the war. The memorial was dedicated by Rev AE Wallace, minister of the parish.

Duns Parish Church as it stands today had 3 precedessor congregations... the original Parish church and the Boston church (united 1953) who united with Duns South on 4th July 1976. There was also a Duns East church that dissolved in 1932, with most of the congregation joining with South. There seem to be no memorial items from South or East churches, though there is a memorial tablet in the adjacent church halls from the East church so I suspect they potentially never had any.

(Not on UKNIWM entry).

There are 2 rolls in the west porch. Strangely, both are identical... despite being handwritten. Infact even the changes in ink seem to be the same. It may be that there was originally one in each porch which were later put in the one porch.

It seems likely that they were started during 1914 then abandoned.

Afterall there are 83 names on the roll, and 42 killed on the plaque.

Casualties are not denoted.

COLDINGHAM LAD KILLED

We regret to report that Mr and Mrs Holywell, Kilnknowe, Coldingham, have received intimation that their eldest son - James Thomson Holywell, M.G.C. - has been killed by a sniper in France. Deceased was a promising young man, and previous to joining was a grocer in Aberfeldy. Much sympathy is extended to Mr and Mrs Holywell and family, as they have already lost a son, whilst on active service.
