I've been transcribing the names from the ww1 memorial in the North Parish Church in Stirling. One man (Robert Scott) was a private in "GGC Cont". I'm guessing Cont is short for Contingent (as in Canadian, New Zealand Contingents etc) but can't find GGC (even on Google!)
Another (Wm Wallace) was a sergeant in "ALHFA" - something Light Horse Field Artillery is my best guess! I'm sure someone out there will know.

GGC Cont is a bit trickier, isn't it?

I think you are likely to be along the right lines with the Canadian Contingent, but the unit? Most of the battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force had their roots in militia units. A few could fit with CCG:

1st Regiment (Canadian Grenadier Guards) Militia was associated with the 14th (Royal Montreal Regiment), 87th (Canadian Grenadier Guards) and 245th (Montreal Grenadiers) Battalions.

One man that fits above, number-wise, is Corporal 26635 who was awarded the Military Medal. His number fits in the range of the 14th Bn (25501-27000). A search of the Canadian records indicates that this will indeed be your man - father, Robert Scott snr, 28 Maple Place, Stirling. So I suppose, GGC Cont could be Grenadier Guards Canadian Contingent?

CWGC record

Cheers,

Stuart

edit: added on last sentence about GGC Cont and CWGC link

Wow! I would never have got that. Thanks a lot, Stuart.

Edit: just had another look at the photo - there are 2x Robert Scott; one is Corporal Robert Scott MM; the other is Private Robert Scott GGC Cont. I wonder if they have put the same man on twice?? Both would fit in with your findings.

A.R.C. - any ideas? First World War period.

Also have a note of a man in L.N. Lancers - any thoughts? Possibly a misprint for Loyal North Lancs?

Please note we have another abbreviations thread here:

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1075

It would be better if we kept any abbreviation queries in one place. We'll leave this one here in the Queries and Requests section but please direct further questions onto the other thread.

Adam

ps I would agree with a printing error for Loyal North Lancs
