North British Locomotive Company, 110 Flemington Street, Springburn, Glasgow G21 4TD

OS Grid Ref: NS 606675

After the merger of Neilson, Reid and Company, Sharp, Stewart and Company, and Dübs and Company in 1903, it was necessary to centralise the administration of all three works. In 1909, this magnificent building, designed by James Miller, was opened as the headquarters of the North British Locomotive Company. It was opened by The Rt. Hon. the Earl of Rosebery.
Over the doorway, a sculpture of a North British 'Atlantic' class locomotive, with chains and haulage gears as swags, is flanked by two classical figures representing 'speed' and 'science'.
After the liquidation of the North British Locomotive Company in 1961, the building was bought by Glasgow Corporation and used as an annexe of Stow College, until becoming Springburn College of Engineering in 1965 and Springburn College in 1981. After merging with Barmulloch College, its name changed to Glasgow North College. It is now a business centre.( Extract from Glasgow Digital Library)

Inside, across the foyer, are three magnificent stained glass windows, a war memorial by William Meikle & Sons.
Two of the panels are conventional, the central one showing a soldier with Mars the God of war, and on one side of it the classical figure of a blacksmith forging a sword.
The third panel is very unconventional, representing a female munitions worker, one of the thousands who replaced the men who went off to fight, working in the 'Mons' and 'Marne' munitions factories of the Atlas Works.
The windows also show the crests of the regiments depicted on the large bronze plaque which lists the names of the fallen. The window was unveiled by the Prince of Wales on 9 March 1921.
Over 3000 men from the North British Locomotive works served in the 1914-18 war, and more than 300 died in the killing fields of Flanders and elsewhere.

In 1914, the directors of the North British Locomotive Company offered the main part of their administration building in Flemington Street to the Scottish branch of the British Red Cross, as existing hospitals were insufficient to cope with the war wounded. It opened as Springburn Hospital on 24 December 1914.
Springburn Hospital was one of three emergency military hospitals in the area. Bedding and comforts were donated by the public, and the Red Cross booklet of 1915 states that for the sum of £50 a donor could name a bed. Patients not confined to bed wore distinctive blue suits with red ties.

That's a very handsome WW1 memorial in particular.
Good photos John. They should be very interesting to research.

Does anyone know if these memorials are still in their location listed here? The reason I ask is that I photographed a memorial with names (apparently identical to that listed here) in the Glasgow Museum's Resource Centre on 13th Oct this year.

Either this memorial has been moved, or there is an identical one which was in a different location.
