St Andrews Conservative Club Memorial

UNVEILED BY COLONEL SIR ALEX. SPROT

An impressive ceremony was carried through in the St Andrews Conservative Club last night, when a War Memorial to the members of the Club who fell in the war was unveiled by Colonel Sir Alexander Sprot.Mr W.Norman Boase,CBE,Chairman of the Club, presided. The proceedings opened with the singing of "O God, our help in ages past",after which Professor Kay,DSO,gave a prayer of dedication.
Colonel Sprot said that the memorial would remind them of the great debt they owed the fallen, and it would also be a record of the Great War,the greatest in history. They should be thankful to God,who gave such a fine spirit to their countrymen.Their greatest debt was due to those who went out and did not return.Seventy-seven of the members of the Club had served their country, and ten had made the supreme sacrifice.
Pipe-Major Kirk played "The Flowers of the Forest" and Scout Drum-Major R.King sounded the "Last Post".
The memorial consists of a brass tablet mounted on an oak frame,and bears the names of the fallen,as follow: John Anderson,John R. Douglas,James Forbes,Robert Freer,Charles Gillespie,James Gillespie,James M.Hendry,Robert Herd,William G. Stevenson,Walter Ward.
The next-of-kin were each handed a photograph of the memorial tablet.
