J. CAIRNEY, Private, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

Listed on Bonnybridge Civic Memorial. (WW1)

I can't find any J. Cairneys on either CWGC or SNWM who served in the Argylls let alone one with a local connection of any sort.

Neither can I find any Cairney families living in the area in 1911.

Any suggestions anyone?

The first one Kenneth mentioned also has a SWB listing. He was discharged on 25/08/1917 due to sickness. He had enlisted on 07/08/1914. He served with the 7th A&SH which, according to the LLT on the Great War Forum, was raised at Stirling during August 1914.

Edit: Just noticed that this man's service records survive. He, his wife Elizabeth, and his father resided at Bannockburn then Parkhead, Glasgow. He was a Coal Miner and was discharged suffering from bronchitis. No mention of him dying in the records.

Anne

I suspect he was S/1433 ( later 278855) James Cairney, 7th A & SH, b Parkhead, Glasgow, e Stirling 7 Aug 1914.
He was discharged unfit ( Bronchitis) to an address at Royal George, Bannockburn ( father) on 27th August 1917. In July 1918 his wife advised they were living at Eastern Rd., Parkhead since the previous year and that James was with the ASC in England ( Home Defence).
Let me know if you obtain his DC.

Thanks for the input everyone.

He's on Bonnybridge Civic Memorial, so that would imply he didn't survive. Laughing

I've looked at lots of service records including ones from umpteen other regiments which I though 'might' be him, but none of them mention Bonnybridge (or any of the other nearby villages).

The memorial is here: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=87&highlight=bonnybridge

There are no deaths for a J. Cairney in Stirlingshire between 1914 - 1921 on SP's index and 189 in the whole of Scotland, so I'll not be downloading anytime soon!!

Any idea of his age?

There's two James Cairney's died in Glasgow in 1922, one aged 19 the other 40.

Derek.

Haven't a clue Derek.

I've tried searching through census return as well, but with no clues whatsoever, it's just too vague.

Ken

No co-incidence and nothing odd. I had a look for J. Cairney A&SH and the CWGC site only records one A&SH casualty (Patrick Cairney) who is on the Slammanan memorial. I could not see from the statutory records any evidence that Patrick Cairney had the letter "J" as a middle initial so I assumed that this is not the Cairney Anne is looking for. I noticed John Douglas Cairney was Royal Scots and I subsequently could not find anything about him either on the CWGC site etc. John Ducat Cairney was born in Arbroath and the 1911 Census has the family staying at Broughty Ferry. No connection I can see with Bonnybridge and therefore the possibility of two completely different men at this stage.

Hence my query. Is this OK??????

No worries Douglas - It just struck me as a funny co-incidence that two men with the surname Cairney should come up in two places.
I was a bit "slow" - I should have made the connection with your user name.
Cheers

I've looked at all the 'possible' J. Cairneys on CWGC & SNWM and they are as follows:

James, Lance Corporal, Black Watch, No. S/8713, born Airdrie
James, Private, Machine Gun Corps, No. 35410, born Glasgow
James, Private, Highland Light Infantry, No. 12619, born Glasgow
John, Private, Royal Scots, No, 14253, born Bo'ness
John, Private, Black Watch, No. S/20762, born Barony, Glasgow
John, Private, Seaforth Highlanders, No, S/8648, born Edinburgh
John, Rifleman, Royal Irish Rifles, No. 11257, born Hamilton

I've also tried Cairnie and Kearney but nothing definitive appears. Confused
