The WW2 plaque has the name Anne PARK-KERR (hyphenated)as QAIMNS
does not appear on CWGC as Park-Kerr or Kerr.

SNWM has KERR. Annie Park as Nursing Sister, Merchant Navy.

Any suggestions please?

Tony

From : http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=987

KERR, Anne ‘Annie’ Park
Rank: Sister
Number: Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service attached Merchant Navy
Unit: Merchant Navy, S.S.Ceramic (Southampton)
Died: Ship torpedoed 07/12/1942 Atlantic
Age: 51
Parents: Daughter of Andrew and Isabella Kerr.
Born: Lochinver
Home: Ledbeg, Assynt
Job/Trade: Nurse
Notes: There was only one survivor out of the 655 on board after ship torpedoed
Commemorated: Tower Hill Memorial
Memorials: Listed on the Assynt War Memorial, Lochinver and Alness Memorial, Ross & Cromarty
Listed in the Merchant Navy roll of Honour, SNWM

Further investigation may be needed though because I think she may actually have been MN only at her death, and was a former QAIMNS.

Kind regards

Adam

Your comment "Further investigation may be needed though because I think she may actually have been MN only at her death, and was a former QAIMNS." sounds logical as I am sure if she was still a serving QA she would have been commenorated as such.

Will do a biut more fishing around.

Well, she is certainly commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial

Name: KERR, ANNIE PARK
Initials: A P
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Nursing Sister
Regiment/Service: Merchant Navy
Unit Text: S.S.Ceramic (Southampton)
Age: 51
Date of Death: 07/12/1942
Additional information: Daughter of Andrew and Isabella Kerr.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 26.
Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL

However, looking at her age I wonder if she had resigned her commission for what she assumed might be an easier life on board ship?

I would be fairly certain she was MN at her death, otherwise, as you point out, she would not be commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial which is for Mercantile Marine personnel.

Looks like we both had the same idea, ask Sue Light!

For the benefit of the thread sue lights comment was = "I can't see that if she's named as a nursing sister, Merchant Navy on the Tower Hill Memorial, that she could have been serving with QAIMNS Reserve at the time she died. She trained as a nurse at Holborn and Finsbury Hospital, London, between 1922 and 1925, so no WW1 service with them. As to whether she had served with them at some time prior to her death in WW2 - there is no index of nurses who joined the military nursing services during the war, so it is just not possible to say. I don't think her age would necessarily have been a problem during wartime, as if she had joined near the beginning of the war she would have been under fifty, and for the Reserve that might have been acceptable. But I don't think there are any available sources at present that would show whether she had joined QAIMNS Reserve for wartime service. "

So why she is quoted on the Memorial as QAIMNS we may never know.
There were 27 QAs and 3 TANS Nursing Sisters who went down with the Ceramic so whoever compiled the list of names for commemoration may have confused her with the QAs.

It far from unusual for details on memorials to be wrong. As you suggested, it may be she served with QAIMNS at some point prior to WW2 and it was " assumed " this was her service at her death.
To present her on a listing as " Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service attached Merchant Navy " is no more than supposition.

As you note, her name is hyphenated on the memorial, which is also at odds with the facts.

Once upon a time, like most uninitiated people, I took info on war memorials as gospel, one soon learns.

This man has been bothering me for some time. Nearly ten years now. I think I have finally got to the bottom of who he was.

Adam Brown wrote:

The Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour has two entries for what I think is the same man in 1915 and again in 1918

Bower D. R. Dalmuir Corporal Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 9th Bn 02-Jun-15 Page 2 Wounded
Bower D. R. Glasgow 2nd Lieutenant Cameron Highlanders 09-Oct-18 Page 8. Killed in action in Palestine (This entry has a photo)

Here is his CWGC entry. Just to confuse matters further he was attached to the Seaforth Highlanders when he died

BOWER, DONALD ROBERT
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Date of Death: 20/09/1918
Age: 24
Regiment/Service: Cameron Highlanders attd. 1st Bn. Seaforth Highlanders
Grave Reference: R. 41.
Cemetery: RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY
Additional Information:Son of Scott and Christina McDonald Bower, of Glasgow.

I don't know what his contact with Assynt was but we often see former units listed on war memorials. This will need some further investigation but I think this is the man. I haven't been able to find other suitable candidates to date.
