While looking for details of a Thomas Kerr of Bo'ness I ran across this record. I've never seen such an "odd" mixture.
He's listed as Mercantile Marine Reserve but has a service number and is listed on the Naval Memorial rather than at Tower Hill.
Note also the Military Medal award.
R.H.M.S. "Motagua" (what does the "R" stand for???) was an armed merchant cruiser and was involved in a collision on 19 March.
Can anyone help me dis-entangle this record??

KERR, THOMAS
Rank:Greaser
Service No:16898
Date of Death:19/03/1918
Age:30
Regiment/Service:Mercantile Marine Reserve
R. H.M.S. "Motagua."
Awards:M M
Panel Reference31.
MemorialPLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL
Additional Information:
Husband of Fanny Ann Kerr, of 24, Fairfield St., Govan, Glasgow.

This appears to be a typo, I will report it.
He will have been serving in / under Royal Navy authority at his death to qualify for Plymouth Memorial.

Thanks Jim - do you think that the MM might also be a mistake and is meant to refer to the Mercantile Marine????

Ken

Both these issues are due to a scan error some years ago and will be fixed.

It happened because the original register has the unit as M.M R. H.M.S.”Montagua”.
The missing full stop in MMR fooled the scanner. It has also taken it to be MM (Award) instead of MMR (unit). The missing dot has caused it all.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Thanks Jim - but I do I feel kind of disappointed that it's a "techie" error.
I was looking forward to a more exotic story Sad
Ho, hum.
