This was posted in the Dumfries thread. I have taken a copy and posted it here instead.

Thank you for replying to my note regarding a Piper from Dumfries. I have another concern, about a Piper from Daliburgh but a bit hesitent to mention it; being so far from the source, and doubtful about how it might be taken. But I would like to see this Piper get his due.
Kenneth MacLeod was from Daliburgh and enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders in March of 1911 at the age of 17. He served in France with the 1st Battalion, having previously served with the 3rd (Special Reserve). Having been woumded at Mons, he was invalided home. On release from the hospital, he served as a Piper at the depot. He was taken ill and died at the Invergarry Sanatorium where he died on the 30th July, 1918 and was buried with Military Honours at the Kilchulman Burial Ground.
However, his name on the South Uist Memorial appears to be in error.; "Pioneer Kenneth MacLeod, 1st Camerons." I doubt that there had been a 'Pioneer' (Sergeant) MacLeod with the Battalion. This error, if in fact it is, may be quite understandable if the engraver had only the rank as "Pr." to refer to. It's happened before.
I hope that this note will not be taken as critical.

I notice that the plaque which Kenneth MacLeod is mentioned on seems to be a later addition.

The following man doesn't seem to appear on this memorial which seems a bit strange as he was a local School Master (Eriskay).
Possibly the criteria was that the men had to be 'natives'?

Article from Head Teacher Mr. Miller MacDonald
“The school welcomed Dominic Dendoorven, Curator of the Flanders Museum in Belgium earlier this month. Dominic gave an interesting talk about the First World War and the important contribution made by soldiers from the Highlands and Islands. He donated a piece of a World War shell that was found on the fields of Poelcapelle where Henry Devlin, Schoolmaster on Eriskay and serving with the 5th Cameron Highlanders was killed on the 12th October 1917, aged 39. He is commemorated on the memorial to the Missing at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele.” |
