Details: Have you discovered that you have roots in Angus? Do you want to find out more about your ancestors? A genealogy event is being held in the historic Brechin Mechanics' Institute. A fascinating programme of talks and workshops are planned to help you with your family history research. There will also be a number of experts on hand throughout the day to offer help and advice.

10.00am - 11.00am

'Duries in Angus before and after the Reformation' with Dr Bruce Durie, BBC broadcaster, author and genealogist. John Durie, one of the early firebrand Reformed churchmen was eventually "exiled" to Montrose, where he lived quite happily. His sons became ministers. Robert went to civilise the Isle of Lewis and set up the first Scots Kirk at Leyden. Joshua was minister at Inverkeilor. There is also a family connection back to Archbishop Beaton. How does all that link with Somerset, the AA and women's tennis? Dr Bruce Durie will reveal all.

'Wark o the Weaver' with Ron Scrimgeour. Find out about the fascinating history of weaving in Angus with Ron Scrimgeour, born in the heart of "Juteopolis" in Dundee. He worked in the jute mills whilst at school and university, and following a teaching career was invited to join the Weaver Incorporation of Dundee. The Pitstop Project recently undertook some research into the local weaving industry and as a result two young people are learning how to weave and will give practical demonstrations of this old craft.

Spinning Demonstrations with Sheila Beckett. Find out more about this traditional skill with Sheila from the Woolly Bucket, an Angus based yarn-spinning business.

'Gravestones and their Meanings' with Fiona Scharlau, Angus Archives Manager. Scottish kirkyards are the last resting place of our ancestors and gravestones contain a wealth of genealogical information. Find out how to decipher the meanings behind different gravestone symbols and how these documents carved in stone can help you with your family history research. Afterwards, enjoy a guided tour around Brechin Cathedral's densely crowded gravestones which feature a variety of trade symbols and winged souls.

'The Future of Genealogy Research' with Chris Van Der Kuyl, CEO of Brightsolid Limited. Dundee born Chris is one of Scotland's leading entrepreneurs. Brightsolid is a leading online technology and publishing business based in Dundee which has revolutionised the way that people can look for their ancestors. Chris will offer an insight into how best to use online resources, focusing on recent developments in the area and Brightsolid's vision for the future of genealogy research.

'Research and Writing your Family History' with Dr Nick Barratt, historian, author and broadcaster. Best known for his work on BBC's genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?, Nick has published many books on genealogy and will lead a workshop on researching and writing your family history, with some helpful advice for those who want to see their work in print.
