In 2019 a tree was planted in memory of Private John McGarry, close to the Old Kilpatrick War Memorial.

The plaque beside the tree reads-
In Memory Of / Pte. John McGarry / Died in Active Service / 8th November 1972

WMR 83629 and WMO 281365 refer.

He apparently died in a 'friendly fire' incident.

His place of burial appears to be unknown.
