Trying to find this man from WW1.Think that he is from Dundee, although not certain.
If so could be:

L/Cpl George Duff
7837
1st Black Watch
kia 27 October 1914
born Dundee

In Dundee ROH address shown as 2 Bright St,Lochee,Dundee. There is a William Morrison, stableman, shown in 1914 Dundee Directory.Could he have used his mother`s maiden name?
Can`t find any details in any local paper.

Can any of the sleuths shed any light with any more info or offer an alternative?

Hugh - where does the name George Morrison Duff come from?

As far as L/Cpl George Duff is concerned his Medal Card has his date of entry as 13/8/1914 which lines up with the 1st Black Watch's arrival at Le Havre.
In 1901 he was with the 2nd Battalion Royal Highlanders at Panmure Barracks in Montrose (aged 19) so I'd guess he was a reservist in 1914 and was posted to the 1st. (The 2nd were in India)
In 1891 it looks like he was at 24 Ogilvies Rd. Dundee (aged 9) with his parents William and Mary who might be "Burt", but you'd need to confirm that.

The Army Registers of Soldiers effects shows his beneficiary as "Son William C or G" born 30/8/1911. Unusually there is no other relative shown (Wife, Father or Mother) so possibly unmarried? widower?

Thanks Ken.The name comes from a friend who knows nothing more.I`ll check the Directories further to see what i can find.I suppose Duff could easily be Burt with poor handwriting!
