Wishaw 1918-1945 War Memorial
Location: In the grounds of Wishaw Sports Centre, Alexander Street, Wishaw, North Lanarkshire
OS NGR: NS 78978 54783
Date of Unveiling: 30th September 1986
Number of Pre-1914 Names: N/A
Number of WW1 Names: N/A
Number of Inter-War Names: No names listed for this period
Number of WW2 Names: No names listed for this war
Number of Post-1945 Names: N/A
Memorial type: Cross - Celtic
This is an odd memorial. Wishaw already has memorials to the First and Second World Wars, but it is possible that this memorial has been erected so there could be a "public" memorial that is in plain sight.
There are no names on this memorial.
The "blank" part of the inscription I am told is a part which was removed as it named the head of the organising committee responsible for erecting the memorial. Apparently there was a bit of an outcry about this and it was removed.

This is a pic taken in the 1990's, also in the grounds of the Sports Centre, so I take it the memorial has not moved and the building has been erected behind it since then.
Its an unusual memorial to be dated 1918 - 1945, I wonder if this was a way of including the Spanish Civil War in an official civic memorial?

From the looks of that photo the memorial has indeed been moved. It now faces the car park you can see in your photo and the area surrounding it has been landscaped, removing most of the plants. |

Thread now edited to make the title more accurate, since the memorials for the First and Second World War have now been found and added to the section.
I will also revisit this memorial and get some better photographs. |
