Can anyone help identify on which War Memorial the following man is commemorated??
12396 PTE HENRY EDWARD DIXON 2nd BATT ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
Born North Shields.
Lived Sinclairstown Fife (amongst other places).
Died of wounds (received in France) in 4th London General Hospital on 25th April 1915.
Buried Wigton Cemetery Cumbria.
The most obvious place would be Wigton War Memorial on which there are two men named Dixon but the initials don't match.
He seems to have been resident in Scotland prior to enlisting hence my search here.

Some interesting puzzles about this man.
CWGC has his age as 35 but FreeBMD has him as 28 - died Lambeth.
They also have him as "Son of Edward and Charlotte Dixon" but the headstone documents show Mrs. R.M. Dixon of 6 Nourse Street, Troyeville, Johannesburg, S.A. as selecting the inscription.
Is this his wife???? _________________ Ken |

Hi Ken
Pte Henry Edward Dixon was the son of Edward & Charlotte Dixon.
He was born 1879.
1881 census (England) confirms this (aged 2).
1891 Census (England) confirms this (aged 11).
The inscription on his CWG headstone in Wigton Cemetery gives his age as 35.
So he was 35 (not twenty eight) when he died of wounds 25th April 1915.
I am not familiar with FreeBMD. Can you send me a WWW link to what you are looking at.
He died of wounds in Number 4 London General Hospital. This may be the Lambeth area. Perhaps someone can tell us.
He had a sister Mary Jane on the above census but Mrs R.M.Dixon????
The 1911 census (Scotland) has him as a boarder aged 32 at 16 Sang Place Kirkcaldy.
It is likely at the age of 32 or later he married but I see no record. Perhaps someone can tell us.
Many thanks for your interest and help.
Really appreciated. _________________ Collecting and researching to The Royal Scots Fusiliers (21st Foot). |
