You could be right but, a number of years ago, some well-meaning people thought they would clean the Roxburgh memorial. They must have used some cleaning agent on the lower portion of the memorial - taking the grime and some of the paint and smearing it over the stone. You can see the effect if you examine the main picture I posted. If Smailholm is cleaned, let's hope it is done professionally.
