Bothwell War Memorial Inscription for UKNIWM
UKNIWM Ref No 6004

The memorial is located on the Main Street, Bothwell, South Lanarkshire

Parish – Bothwell
District – Hamilton
Region – Strathclyde

Grid Ref – NS 703592

The memorial is made of stone and consists of a square section plinth and base surmounted by a ‘mercat cross’ pole with lion rampant. The plinth and block are about 2m square at the base and block stands about 2m high. The block has a castellated detail to the top edge and small carved towers. These details are eroded. The WW1 plaque with dedication inscription is on the face of the block to Main Street. At the top of the plaque is a carved brass wreath and within the ‘hole’ in the wreath is a carved crest, possibly a wreath and central fleur-de-lis. The WW2 plaque is on one of the side faces. An octagonal section pole rises from the centre of the block and it is surmounted by a lion rampant clutching a shield in its left paw. This measures some 4 to 5m high so overall size of memorial is 6 or 7m high. The memorial is surrounded by a low black metal railing.

Private Robert Morrison, Gordon Highlanders

(Glasgow Herald 5th Dec 1914)
"Private Robert Morrison, brother of Mrs John Watson, Whiterock Terrace, Cambuslang, was killed in action at Dixmude on November 11. Private Morrison on the outbreak of war enlisted in the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders, and after three weeks training was ordered to the front. He was 38 years of age and unmarried. He was for four years in the volunteer force, and was the crack shot of the company. He was a fine athlete and was for five years a prominent player in Glaston F.C., as well as a member of the bowling club.
