The Berwickshire High School in the county town of Duns opened in 1896, offering the first centralised provision of higher education in Berwickshire.

Broadly speaking: until the late 1940s, children stayed in their local parish school until reaching the school leaving age of 14 - unless they planned to take qualifications in which case they went to "the BHS" from 12. With the raising of the school leaving age to 15 there was a county re-organisation with 'junior secondaries' in Coldstream, Chirnside, Earlston and Eyemouth as well as Duns with the BHS providing 'senior secondary' provision. Then in the late 1960s there was further reorganisation, with junior secondaries abolished and Earlston and Eyemouth upgraded to full secondary status... however, the school remains "the BHS" and not say Duns High School.

So, whilst today the BHS is the secondary school for the middle 1/3 of the county, at the time of the world wars it was the county-wide secondary.

Located in the entrance lobby is the school's memorial to fallen pupils:

This is actually the third building in which the plaques have been placed.

First was the original BHS - a sizeable townhouse bought in 1895 and later extended several times - where they were mounted in the hall.
(It became an agricultural college later part of Borders College but is now offices for Berwickshire Housing Association and its group of companies).

Then the old BHS - purpose built in 1958 - where they got seperated, with one in each wing of the crush hall.
(Currently empty but to host the primary school, council offices and a Jim Clark Museum post-refurbishment).

Finally the new BHS - purpose built in 2009.
